Help / Info getting a NAS

Hello there,

I want to setup up a NAS system as cheap as possible =). 1-2TB, No intense usage. I just want to be able to stream HD movies wireless to my:


1. TV thinking of maybe using a (WD TV Live Streaming Media Player?)
2. Multiple Laptops and wireless desktop
3. Cell Phone (galaxy S3)?
4. Wired PS3 (Main Usage)

I have a Cisco E2000 Wireless N Router and only one maybe two units will access movies at one time. Not really interested in backing up data. I Just want EASY, convenient access to my music and movies.

Look to Nas4Free.org I use it on a rather large system but if you put a system together with it using 4 drives as you need more space you can just swap the drives out one at a time and allow it to rebuild and put more diskspace to use. I have 12 drives in mine and love it, when I need more space I just take a 250 or 500gb out replace it with a 1TB and ZFS takes care of the rest.
 
Are you looking to build your own or is something prebuilt okay?

For a prebuilt, I'd recommend something like the Synology DS212J. Can't beat the interface, and Synology is known for their reliability. It's a 2 bay NAS, so if you had a couple spare 2TB drives you could be up and running in no time. Unfortunately, it's $200 + cost of drives.

Buffalo and Seagate also make some smaller home NAS units. Buffalo has a 2TB, non-expandable unit for $140. A 2TB Seagate unit is just north of $200. For a 1-2TB basic NAS, I don't know that it pays to build one.

Building one myself or pre built is fine. I just need something cost effective to run several devices with HD streaming
 
I am looking at the Synology NAS or maybe even the QNAP equivalent. I've been considering FreeNAS, but it seems a bit overkill for what I need. The two other solutions also have a few nice features in their software I like.
