Hello Peeps,

Myself and my Family will be coming to Orlando Florida for a Holiday at the Start of June 2005, and because the exchange rate is Soooo damn good for us from the UK at the moment i want to take advantage of as many buying opportunities as i can.

Im going to be staying at this Hotel/resort for just over 2 weeks ---> http://www.orangelake.com/

I was hoping someone from the good old US of A, could suggest the best (cheapest) places to buy the following items :-

Shuttle SN25P - UK Price - Not Available Yet
Shuttle SN95G5 V2 - UK Price - £217
AMD Athlon 64 Skt939 Winchester 90nm - UK Price - £165
ATI Radeon X800XT - UK Price - £294

Sony PSP Value Pack - UK Price - Not Available Yet

It would be nice if i could use Internet ordering and have goods delivered to my Hotel/Resort, but i have been told that Online retailers will only deliver to private address's which is a bit of a shame for me........ Either way, im still keen to go shopping on Foot - hehehe.

So where do you Guys think i should start? And what sort of prices do you guys have to pay for these items. The Current Exchange rate makes 1 UK £ Pound = $1.81 Dollers !!! So i am hoping for some very good discounts. I just need some inside info from where is best to buy !!

Thanks in advance !!

Mark

i did the conversion mentally, and u will be payin a lot less buyin here than over there.

There's no computer stores left in Florida! :D They all went out of business except for TigerDirect and CompUSA. We don't even have Fry's down here!

In a mere two years time, TCWO, BCD2000, George's Computers, MB's, and Delta and I'm sure many more all went out of business. And that's just an hour to the West of you in Tampa!

You could order the stuff from Newegg, eWiz or ZipZoomFly and have it delivered to the resort office. That's done all of the time. They're used to it. ;)

I fogot about Chief Value. I don't think they're cheaper... I think they're the same... but they ARE on the East coast.

I noticed the inventory is the same as Newegg's. Is Chief Value owned by ABS as well?

read my post: its newegg. but cheaper. thereby stating that theyre the same company.

and, yes they are cheaper, whether it be save a dollar off the product, or free shipping. either way, he can save even more money by going through CV, instead of the egg.

I read your post. Thank you.

A lot of people will say things like, "It's butter, but lower fat." So I wasn't sure you were being literal or just saying the two are comparable.

Just be carefull you dont get clobbered for VAT on the way back in.
If you do you will need all your recipts to prove how much you spent.

Luck......... :D

What a fantastic response !!

Im going to start E-mailing both NewEgg and ChiefValue and see if they will deliver to my resort. And yeah VAT on entering the UK is always a worry. Just hope i dont get pulled by customs ;)

Thanks to everyone who has replied. Will update ya !!

I don't think so... when I was going back home from the US a customs officer seeing me pushing a cart with like 4 bags/suitcases (2 of them was my brother's who was walking in front of me...) asked me aside and x-rayed them... I did have couple things but I wasn't asked to pay tax or anything... so as long as you don't take like 5 pieces of the same thing you will be just fine..

CV is not always cheaper, there are plenty of items that are actually cheaper on newegg for some reason.

Watch out.. wont customs make you pay a mint to get those items into Europe??

Or will they even let them in your country? Just would hate for you to pay some serious money for some stuff and they charge you out the waaazooo for it when you take it home!

very very large majority of the time CV will be cheaper.

Well ive brought various things back from various countries before (mainly S.Korea and Europe) and never been pulled etc.

Ive been asked once where i had been and for what reason (S.Korea - Business) but they didnt want to have a look in my suitcases, and they didnt ask if i had brought anything back so fingers crossed. The other good thing is im coming over with My Mrs and 2 kids, My Mum and Dad, and my Brother and his Girlfreind so i'll have plenty of Suitcases to scatter the goods between - hehehe

The last thing i need infomation on is PSP's....... Where is the best place to pick one of these up? They arent released in the UK yet but the estimated retail price is going to be around the £250 mark so its going to be so much cheaper to buy in the US (even if i am stuck with region 1 UMD Movies)

Thanks in advance........

I might be way off base here but doesn't the UK use 220V? So if you get those SFF cases and they don't have a switch to go from 110V to 220V you will have to get a new power supply.

Again I'm probably wrong but wouldn't the video card also be affected? There are different standards here in the US (example the FCC). I also don't know about the theater chip on the cards. Would it make a difference if the card is bought here (NTSC) and was put in a (PAL) machine?

The PSP is along the same lines as the video card. Aren't there standards for here and Europe?

I'm probably completely wrong here but it might be worth checking into.

Hmm the Power Supply unit is something i hadnt thought about TBH !! I dont think its a problem tho. Obviously my Power sockets are not only different but also deliver different voltages/currents.

Either way the simple answer is to buy a Travel adaptor. If i were to bring my current PC (Another Shuttle XPC) to the US, and use a travel adaptor it would work fine. (Certainly does for Laptops)
Talking of laptops, S.Korea use the same power system as you guys and having had some S.Korean Visitors at my company this week we had a few issues with powering his Laptop (ie he had no travel adaptor). The answer was just use one of our Guys Laptop power cables. So im sure if i were to use a UK (Kettle) Adaptor the same principle should apply (I hope)

As for displays and TV. We do use PAL, but most of the equipment we buy here can also use NTSC, but since im only going to be using it for PC type stuff its not going to be an issue. I think if i were to buy a TV Card in the US i might struggle because of the way our signals are broadcast, but even then i recall most cards being compatable with pretty much Europe, Asia, Australia and the America's....

PSP Wise. Again i anticipate no problems. I will just use a Travel Adaptor OR buy the correct power lead back here in the UK. Looking at EBAY, there are loads of Asian and US PSP sellers, selling direct into the UK, using US/JAP Spec PSP units but with UK adaptors.....

Im certain i will be able to work around all the above. And i think it will be alot simpler than even needing a Travel Adaptor......... Just need to A) get me loads of Cash together, B) Find Some Online retailer who will deliver to resort, and C) Get lucky Thru Customs

Once I graduate (in a week) I'll be back home in Orlando. You can mail all that stuff to me :)

Seriously though, if you calculate and find out it costs significantly less to buy in the U.S. I guess find an independant courier or something like that.

You'll probably be staying around International Drive unless you know someone around town; that's about a 30 min drive to my house. I wouldn't mind holding it for you but I guess the biggest concern is finding a way that you can trust sending all of that stuff to me. (at least you'll know where I live)

Good luck though.
