So I just got this system up and running and I seem to be having some trouble getting the settings the way I want them.

I have an Asus P8Z68 Deluxe/Gen 3 board and 16GB of Corsair Vengeance ram. I should also note that I water cool.

First problem I got is I cannot get the cpu to stay at one speed. If I let my cpu idle my speed drops to 1600mhz and my multiplyer drops to x16. I disabled Speedstep Tech. and it still changes. What is causing this?

Also, what is the CPU ratio all about? At default it is on AUTO, but it ranges from 16 to 34 I believe.

One last thing, I did not some looking around in the BIOS and I cannot locate where I can change my multiplyer. Do I have to change some option in the BIOS which in turn will allow me to change it?

Should I disable Turbo if I do plan on o/c?

All other tips would be great. Thanks
 
I OC a very similar setup to 4.8Ghz (x48). Let the CPU idle at 1.6Ghz (x16) unless you have an aversion to that. When you load it up it will max out at your OC multiplier.
 
Easiest way to overclock the 2600K is to just change the Turbo Multipliers (should be an option called something like, by all cores). Change it to whatever you want the overclock to be (45 for 4.5Ghz) and the CPU will automatically turbo to that speed when under load. To get started, use a manual Vcore until you get the overclock stable, then you can play with setting an offset voltage to allow the system to run at a lower voltage when idle.

If you feel you must prevent the CPU from downclocking on idle (not sure why you would want to though) you need to disable both EIST and C1E.

Not positive about that board's BIOS, but some will have both Turbo Multiplier, and a CPU Ratio. If so, just leave the CPU Ratio alone, and only use the Turbo Multiplier setting.
 
Thanks for the tips......So what is the highest multiplier I can go to? Can I can change the BLCK speed?
 
Most 2600K's will go to 45 or 46 without any problems, and you can probably do 45 easily without changing anything else in the BIOS (leaving all the voltages, etc on Auto). If you want to go over that you'll need to tweak some things. Don't bother with the BCLK speed - it can only be changed a few percent, since there is no way to change it independently, and it also overclocks everything else (like PCIe bus speed).
