Help i7 running too hot.

System Specs:
6 GB DDR3 1600 (have them running at 1333.)
i7 920 @ stock 2.6 GHz.
Rampage II Gene
Zalman CNPS9900 LED Cooler.

Here is the situation.

I installed the CPU + Zalman. At first my temps were going into the 60s just opening or installing a program. I looked up the instructions and realized I put the Artic Silver 5 incorrectly. Looked at the instructions online and redid the job.

Situation now.

I looked up the hardocp i920 overlocking and heat article. LINK

At first I set the memory in the bios to run at 1600. Then I set the processor to 965 clocks (3.2GHz) using the CPU level up utility from Asus.

My temperatues at idle were 47-48 and when installing stuff it would go into 52ish temps. Running a game (World of Warcraft) it would go 52-60ish. I'm running the fans on silent mode to standard mode.

Kyle says to add about 7-8 degress since his testing was done on outside of a case. I also live in Miami, Florida.

One thing is I don't know how to set the timings for my memory so I decided to run everything at stock and the memory at 1333 below the rated 1600 and wait till Kyles review of this particular board.

My temperatures are still the same at stock clock (2.6 GHz) as when overclocked to 2.8 Ghz and 3.2 GHz. Asus Probe II sounds the alarm at 66-67 degrees. I ran an Anti-Virus scan while running Windows Updates and browsing the web and I gotas high as 70 degrees on stock. The windows CPU utilization widget reports 18-20% usage of the CPU during all this.

Should I be worried? Adding 6 degrees to Kyles 3.8 Ultra test kind of match up.
Idle 48 25% 72 while mine are Idle 45 (not doing anything) to 66 degress at 20-% (anti virus scan, windows updates, web browsing.)

Though his are at 3.8 on the Ultra and mine are at 3.2 on the Zalman. Also, i'm using a tube of Artic Silver 5 from like 3 years ago.

Help :(

Update. Added a Fan to pump air into the motherboard area. So far I'm on 44C System and 76C at 2.6 GHz I7 AT 100 LOAD across all cores with Hyper Threading enabled.

My idle now is 42 C.

I added a fan in the front compartment of my Antec P180. (Has a spot there for a fan and a dust filter.)

I also re-greased the CPU. Here is a picture of it before. Testing right now to see under load. (I'm on my notebook.)
OC'ed to 3.2 GHz I get 84C with Intel Burn Test program at 100%. Opening my case drops the temps to 79C at 100% load and oc'ed to3.2GHz. I need more air coming in or going out. Sigh. Was hoping to do 3.2 OC easy maybe 3.6.

This is the CPU area. I have two vents with hooks to attach fans to both. Should I attach a fan to the top vent blowing cool air down to the zalman? Or should I have a fan blowing air out the back vent behind the zalman?

Update:

Adding a fan to the vent behind the Zalman dropped my i7 (3.2 GHz) idle to 42-43 and my temps at 100% to 73-75 with hyper threading disabled using IntelBurnTest. The temps go as high as 76 but most of the time 73-74. And my room is kind of hot right now.

Zalman is an ok cooler, they are by no means the best now, especially with the i7s. they were nice coolers for AM2 sockets and 939s but thats about it. You should have invested in a True or Noctua coolers, they are by far the best and silent depending on the fans. To take advantage of your Zalman you have to run the fan at max speed which is LOUD like all other zalman fans. Your temps are ok, nothing will burn down. Did you make sure you didnt put a lot of thermal grease on the chip? if you put alot of it down or didnt spread it evenly and thin coat your temps will jump very high. Temps also depend on your other fans and general ventilation in the case, so check those variables out.

I put a horizontal strip like in the Artic Silver 5 instructions. With the arrow marking on the i7 920 on the top left corner I put a horizontal strip of AS5. I will try again today maybe my strip was too much. I'll know for sure when I remove the cooler and look at the spread.

I paid 50 USD shipped for the cooler so I'll probably hold on to it. The guy who sold it to me (on hardforums) said he hit 3.8 or so on it.

Question: In Kyles review was he running his fan at 100%? I'm not running my fan at it's maximum setting I run it on silent operation. With standard operation you can hear the fan but my temps improve by 2 Degress more or less.

temps sound completely fine to me with the cooler you have.. the fan speed you are using..the overclock.. and your location.. the i7's just run hot as hell.. nothing you can really do about it.. even with a TRUE 60C full load is the norm..

i cant remember what the base of a zalman looks like.. but if its just a fat surface.. all you need to do is put a thin line of as5 horizontally across the entire cpu.. you should be perfectly fine with that..
 
yeah the as5 needs to cover more of the cpu.. if you have to just take a credit card or something and smooth it across the cpu.. dont put a ton.. just needs enough to cover it in a thin layer..


and yes you should do exactly what you said with the fans.. it should drastically help since you are running the zalman on silent mode..

also 84C full load on IBT is very good.. IBT is usually 15-20C higher then what you can actually hit running a normal every day multi-threaded application that can load up all 8 threads..

My i7 idles at 40-45 on a good cool day (rare hot hot days around 47-50) ... loads up to IBT never over 65 though :/

around 50c ATM running WoW
 
My i7 (cooled by CM V8) idles around 40 and hits about 60 under full load, using AS Ceramique. I only worry about my VREG temps on my EVGA board. :(

What cooler are you using?

My idle temps when it's cool (like right now) is at 38C. Right now I'm typing here with wow running in window mode and I'm at 40C ith my System at 38C.

I'm curious. With IBT are you just running it at default settings? I'm using Maximum instead of standard testing and for threads instead of Auto I'm using the Maximum
