Hi...here is my problem. I like building computers. But, I have no one to build them for! I love doing it, but certainly I can't just build some then let them sit around, they cost a lot of money! How can I satisfy my craving?

How about you take your current system apart and put it back together several times? That sounds like hours of fun

Just wait until every moron you know with a computer problem rings your phone off the hook.

Then you'll need this:

I like the mug version better :D
I have the problem of too many people asking for help. They don't even RTFM!!!

If you want work though, put up fliers around your neighboorhood, like on the message board offering computer repair etc.

Yeah, I see your point- you can hit people with a mug! :D Seriously, I'm sick of everyone thinking "He knows about computers, I'll ask him before I try to do anything to solve it!"

The best solution: get caller ID. When one of "those" people in you life call, don't answer the phone, and don't call them back for 48 hours. By then, they will have gotten desperate enough to *think* and actually *read* the flippin' manual!

That said, I don't mind calls from people who have done everything they know to do and THEN call for help out of desperation. "D for knowledge, but A for effort".

Isn't that basically the nerd equivalent of masturbation?

do some wire management, sit there and find ways to hide them cables! thats what i do at least..that or I keep buying more toys for it.

Go down to the local little computer shop (probably owned by someone from the Near East) and offer to put stuff together at minimum wage.

working at the local computer store is a good idea, or do a heck of a lot of dumpster diving and get as many parts as possiable and build as many systems as you can and get them all folding for [H]ard folding team (see the distrubuted computing forum if you need more info)

I actually ask them if they RTFM but often they don't. I'm usually guiding them through the manual then, lol.. Caller ID sounds like the way to go.

Anyways back on topic. Decker87, do you like building circuits? Maybe you should get into those hobby kits. I find them much more satisfying, you learn something too.. it isn't just sticking cards in slots. They're much cheaper also. :D

Tommo, I haven't ever tried that because I don't know where to start. It sounds like fun, and I know home-made guitar effects pedals are circuits, so I would like to try that. However, once again, I don't know where to start.

I had a little surf around the web for you, I found a beginners guide to guitar effects pedal building:

http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Library/1355/beginners.html

It's a long read but it looks interesting, cheap to do too.
