help! i get this error when trying to play steam based games

for example, when i try to play CS:S or HL2, in my usual settings ( 1280X1024) it would give this message:

that would turn all the video setting to the default.. but when i try to revert the settings back to 1280X1024 it gives me this error:

anyone know what i can do??? (rig at sig)

if it helps im running under the 71.84 drivers

Can't say your problem is exactly the same as mine, but...

I just solved this problem on my rig. It's actually a memory issue. I will bet that if you go back 66.91 or 67.66 drivers you'll still have the problem. Try raising your DIMM voltage by one or two tenths of a volt, and if that doesn't work, increase your CAS latency.

What brand of memory do you have? I have PDP 3200 (rated for 2-3-2-5) and I had this exact same problem in HL2 on my brand new AMD Nforce4 motherboard as I did on my old Intel 915P. But man, it's nice to have control over DIMM voltage and advanced timings! I love this LanParty!

It may have nothing to do with your problem, but 71.84 would crash combat flight sim3 on my system. Plus it has the temp bug. I went back to 67.02 and things are fine, can play for hours. Might be some buggy drivers.
