OK well i'm fairly frusterated at the moment, seeing that I may have lost about 50GB of music. My computer has been working fine, but just yesterday I noticed the problem. My music directory (C:\MUSIC\) has been split in half. Half of the music in the directory, letters A-M, is still in tack in the directory. The other half of the music was moved? or something to a new directory: C:\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\
MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\
MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\
MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC\MUSIC

Most of the files in this directory are accessable to view in explorer, but none of them will play or can be moved. What happened here? PLEASE provide any help or solutions that you know of. I've done a windows error-checking scan, but it found no errors. I would appreciate any available help. I want my P-Z music back!!

note: EVERYTHING else on the computer is in perfect working order. I see no other problems with the file system, no crashes, etc.

This is a file system error when the directory structure gets recursively link. chkdsk /everything option will most likely fix it but will probably results in losng whats in that directory. A logical sector recovery tool might be able to get the files back if it only the directory structure that is damaged. You will need another drive to send them too. I personally recomend FIle Scavenger it has work for me in the past but it does cost $40.

As for what caused this it is possibly an internal hard disk error or it could have been something on the operating system side too.

My first attempt at chkdsk didn't help. What is the "/everything" option and what is its parameter in the command line?

update: my 2nd scan also came up with no errors

I think the everything option is /p but /? should give a list of the option. This has to be done at the command line but booting your windows disk and selecting the repair console option.

If that doesn't work I would recomend doing a logical recovery of everything that is important. Then do a reformat and reinstal. Errors like these have a habit of multipling.

Thanks for your help guys. File Scavenger found the errors, but i dont have enough space on my 2nd hdd to recover them yet. I planned on buying a new hdd soon anyways, so i may do that. Thanks again :p
