Need some help figuring out what is wrong. The origional problem was the system (Abit AT7) would flash powering down in 5 seconds and then shut off. I figured it was the mother board because the system temp was higher than the cpu temp... dont remember exactly what the temps were.

I have replace the mother board with and NF7-S. This board would not detect the Maxtor HD on the 2nd sata connector. It also would not format the drive on the 1st sata connnector even when i moved the drive to the ide it still would not format. I thought it might be the hd so i replaced it with a WD. Still no good. I got the motherboard RMA'd and it now detects the drives but still will not format. What happens is that when installing XP Pro, it starts to format and gets all the way to the end where it should start copying files and says it was unable to format the drive. I have replaced the CPU, HD and the Moterboard. Running corsair (the good stuff not the value)...

Anyone have a clue what the problem might be?
 
First, make sure you have the SATA enabled in the mobo's bios (it's on by default, I think, and it does sound like you have it enabled). See the manual on that part.

Next, when you are loading XP, at the very beginning of loading it do you see it ask "press F6 to load 3rd party drivers"? You need to press F6 and load drivers for the RAID from a floppy to get it to work properly. I've only got one SATA drive on my setup at the moment, so I didn't go through the F6 routine, but since you have two, you'll need to do the F6 trick to run the RAID.

Edit: I just re-read your post and now I'm not sure -- do you have two drives or one? With one drive the F6 trick isn't your issue.
 
The SATA is enabled and I did F6 and Load the drivers from the floppy. This problem also exists if the drive is connected to the standard IDE port.
 
Do you have one drive or two? Maybe the reverse is the problem -- maybe you need to disable the SATA in the bios (if you have only one drive connected), maybe it's interfering somehow?
 
I have taken it down to one drive and wiped out the raid. I have installed a new sata drive.

I used 2 maxtors ide drives using the sata to ide adaper.
I tried 1 maxtor using the sata adapter
I tried it on the ide port
I tried a WD on the ide port
I have tried a new samsung sata.

when on the ide port, i tried loading the sata drvers using f6 as well as not loading them.

All the combinations result in the same problem. XP setup will not format the drive. I have ran powermax from maxtor it is able to lowlevel format the drives and gives them a clean bill of health.

I did run memtest on the memory when it was on the AT7 board and the memory passed i have not run it on the nforce2 board.
