help!! good northbridge fan?

damn northbridge fan on my ic7 is on the fritz, what's a good replacement? quick responses are appreciated.

think the thermalright nb-1c would be best but if you got good air flow.. zalman cant be beat for noise vs cooling... the fins are a lot bigger then they may look..
 
True, but the IC7 uses the four loops surrounding the northbridge chip. If it had holes, then the Zalman would be a good choice.
 
one of those little punk posts came out, I just pushed it back in there..when I replace it, I'm going to use some epoxy and hopefully it'll stay. think compusa might have one? I'm just looking for a replacement, not the best one money can buy.

Agreed. Get one and be happy. I'm running mine fanless and its barely warm to the touch.
The Vantec Iceberq is LOUD. I had one on my 9800pro for a while, and the high pitch was quite annoying. The Zalman is another choice, but the Swiftech looks better, and is removable.
 
The Iceberg IMO just doesn't have the mass to cool without a lot of air (and thus noise from the crappy little fan). Go with a bigger heatsink like the Thermalright or Swiftech and ghetto mount it if you have to, but you will be much happier.

The NB-1C probably cools a bit better, but it's a hell of a lot noisier!
 
don't some people passively cool their NB? could I just take the fan off of the heatink and just have the retention clip and heatsink on there? I took the fan off of the heatsink yesterday and it had a ton of dust in there, I cleaned it as best I could, and it worked well for about 30-45min, then started acting up again. how about the thermaltake blower? would I have any clearance problems when buying a cpu heatsink/fan? I'm thinking about the xp-90 if it helps..
 
thermaltake blower is crap.. somthing like 7 cfm for 55 db or somewhere around those lines

if you want passive... zalman(theres a 32mm version as well as 47)...
 
Here's one more vote for the Thermalright in a passive setup or the Swiftech with the fan if you want to do active cooling...as the Swifty is still quite quiet. If I dont end up WC'ing my NB I'm gonna try and throw one of those Swifties on my DFI, as at 1.7v and up it does get quite warm...and even if it didnt help a LOT I'd still be more comfortable knowing that it's stayin' cooler.
 
well, I squirted a bit of wd-40 in there, it's flucuating between 6750 and 7031. I'm going to get a new setup, I just need to decide. I haven't bumped up my v-core to overclock it, so I'm not too incredibly worried about heat, but since it is still 1ghz over, I'm going to get something better than stock. I'll look more into passive cooling..the swiftech doesn't look like it'll clear many heatsinks other than stock-dimensioned ones.

Kidna off topic, but why not keep your cooler and save the cash to put towards getting rid of that garbage 5200??? Unless you've got something else planned for a card/system upgrade I think your priorities are a little screwey if you're looking at a new NB cooler when you're choppin' along with that FX bringing shame to your 3.4GHz 2.4C rig. :p
 
i just used one of the early 486/ P1 fans i had laying around..i had lots and the heat sink my my mobo was good enough to do the trick, just needed some more air flow..hehe, i used plastic covered twist ties to hold it in place...my brother and "common sense" objected, but the way i have it, the tie is only and COULD only touch the fan, and the little metal wire holding the heat sink in place..

face it..i like being cheap

I'm not much into gaming. I didn't want a gaming machine, just a nice, fast, reliable machine, which is what I have. I'll probably upgrade my card sometime..maybe after I buy my digital rebel. And I think my priorities are straight since the video card isn't affecting me the way the NB cooler is. :cool:

NP, I had a feeling that you just wanted a fast SYSTEM and weren't into gaming that much....but you have to agree it still looks kinda silly sittin' in your sig. :p
 
yeah, the thing's weak. there are a bunch of cards out now, when I was really looking at them, the 9800pro was the must-have card, but I don't even know what's good now..I'll search sometime.

Speaking of which man, 9800Pro's are getting fricken cheap....might be a good time to finally pick one up. ;)
 
Swiftech MCX159 (as stated above). It's freaking amazing. I just got mine and it's wonderful.
 
when I was thinking, I wasn't working. now that I'm working, I wanna buy a nice d-slr camera. maybe I'll ask for a card for Christmas or just save up some more and splurge and buy a whole bunch of stuff.

No one mention about Microcool northpole. It comes with pll and mosfet sinks. Check this:

The Northpole is nice, but at the much higher noise levels and directly on par temperature results when compared to the Swiftech it kinda makes it tough to settle on the Microcool...unless you like the look that much more and you want the extra heatsinks....as I do. ;)
 
I think I'll probably do the zalman NB sink w/the XP-90..might order it today. maybe get some more RAM while I'm at it. what's a nice, highflow, quiet fan for the xp-90? I know papst is good, but they're pretty expensive.

Thanks for this link, I have the same problem (as do many other ic7-max owners) I already have the smaller zalman, I think I will give this a try this weekend.

I actually tried the epoxy from zalman, but the northbridge is a 'flip-chip' so the contact area is very small, long story short, I noticed that the new heatsink was leaning a little (vertical case) and it came right off in my hand.

so, thank you very much
 
thanks for bumping the thread, mine started acting up again today..I guess I'm gonna have to do some upgrading. :cool:
