Help getting stable on 920

I have been trying to get my cpu stable at 4.2ghz for a lil bit. Here are my settings

Blck-200
Cpu Vcore- 1.3v
CpuPll-1.88v
QPi Voltage 1.3v
Dram voltage 1.66

21 ratio settings all ram settings on set to auto for now.

with hyper-threading, speedstep, C1E support and intel speed step is all disabled.

When i run a stress test it works for about 2 test on IBT and then it just freezes. I have tryed bumping the voltage up and everything else is set to auto.

Does anyone have any advice. I tryed it at 3.2 it was fine i had it at 3.8 but it would bsod all the time. Im not sure what to do now...

If it isn't broke - don't mess with it IMO, I still have issues with such low voltages on the CPU, but if it runs fine - then cool. Personally I would jack the CPU up a tad, @ 4.2GHz even these i7's need a bit of a push via voltage.

One thing I would also highly suggest is not to set your RAM timings on Auto, set them at what your DIMM's require for timings.
 
thats at 4ghz i wonder if i could set the ratio to 21 so that way i am at 4.2ghz then bump the voltage a bit and then set all my ram settins..
 
I set the ram to 8-8-8-24 and 1604mhz close to that. I also set the ratio to 21 and left the voltage cuz when i jack it up one + it turns red..
 
I ran it like that and it got to 94c on my highest core so im going to have to wait untill i do liquid cooling before i can really let it run for awhile. Here are some screenies

about 90*C, ambient is 77*F and I have push pull with shrouds on my H50, this is a good guide that got me to 4.2GHz relatively easy.

above 4.0 is where temps and voltages have to exponentially increase with every mhz. My chip has been cruising folding 24/7 at 100*C for days on end. if you're worried your chip is gonna die with heat, dont :p
 
I thought it was bad to run your chips that high? I would like to lower my temps lol
 
My 920 takes a huge voltage jump to get past 4ghz this also causes a drastic change in temps. I can load at 70c @4ghz while 4.2ghz is 78-80c. I decided it wasn't worth the unnoticeable performance gain.

TJMax is about 100 degrees for these 920s, so while it certainly isn't an ideal temp, according to Intel it shouldn't hurt it.

But yeah, past 4.0 the heat and volts needed just go spiraling out of control so honestly I'd just leave the thing at 4.0 unless you wanted to get a really nice custom water cooled solution.

At 4.0 I'm around 70-75C under load, but when I jump up to 4.2 or beyond I can hit tjmax on anything more stressful than a single run of 1M superpi. I'm using a TRUE for cooling.
 
What settings should i use to lower it to 4.0? Can i change the um ratio to 20? and lower my voltages a bit? I wonder which voltages I would have to lower then..
 
Turn hyperthreading back on if its stable. ~4 ghz should still be well within the range of not worrying too much about HT screwing up your overclock.

Im currently up to 4.2 at 1.29V and HT is not a problem. Most of my settings are the same as what I told you before, but I dont think your chip is quite as happy at lower voltage as mine.

Another thing you need to take into consideration is that your processor is rarely going to see the temps that Prime or Linx or other stability tests will produce. I hit about 78-81 on mt current settings, but rarely see anything higher than 65 under normal use.
 
Ok, I will try to turn HT back on. and ill write down all of my settings. I max at about 65c while gaming in CSS

I folded on my 920 for an asus comp. at 4.2ghz for a few days with H50 and was hitting high temps also. I am not a H50 fan I have had two they aren't really any better than my zalman 10x flex. I changed it over to my apogee waterblock and dropped some c's and ran stable for over a month at I think 1.35v-1.40v can't remember. But what most people are saying about the v increase past 4.0 and temps is true. Needs more vcore IMO.
 
I plan to run it at 4ghz for now i think i might bump my v-core up a bit to mabye be 1.35 and see if i can run HT but i thought that ht was bad cuz you get less fps and stuff.

I game at stock settings and my game plays great. I just don't see the draw or benefit to 4.0 or higher for gaming. The max speed I will game on is 3.2-3.5ghz I think that's plenty. And when I had my 920 kicked up to 4.2ghz I had HT enabled no bsods. But my vcore was higher. IMO I think your vcore is to low. Even if it goes red it'll be fine. I had my RE3 with 980x kicked way past red 1.72v. :) I'll be doing close to the same on 990x this week trying to break 3x gpu vantage record for water. :)

What's your setup going to be? im looking at a xspc rasa rs240 kit and changing some parts around.

Turn off speedstep, CPU PLL - 1.8 is enough, 1.84 max.

Increase Vcore, and put uncore x2 +1/2 then your ram multy,also try x21 cpu ratio instead of 20.

I will change the CPU PLL to 1.80

There is absolutely no reason what so ever have a 920 at ~4ghz anywhere close to 1.7Vcore. Ever. Or even 1.45 on the newer batches. If you cant get stable below 1.5 you are most likely not using other options.

EDIT: Or your motherboard/PSU quality is interfering.
 
I wonder if mine is interfering. Since my psu sucks and my mobo isnt amazing... Do you think that those have anything to do with them?

Dude maybe u should reread my post. Never said anything about a 920 with 1.7v....lol r u crazy! 980x man 5.3ghz. And I have a 990x at 1.66v @5.3ghz that's hopefully gonna get me vantage score. :)

I'm not a big OCZ psu fan. They're cheap in price and I always go by the old saying " u get what u pay for!" so IMO I would try a diff psu. But for gaming and everyday use I recommend 3.2ghz. More life out of your parts cooler temps and less hassle.
 
Yeah that makes sense, i think ill just take it down to 3.4 for now since i dont need 4ghz. What voltages would i need for that though?

I would put all at auto except ram bump ram down to 1066 until u are oc'ed then change. As for the rest auto till it bsods then change vcore that's all u need change for 3.4ghz
 
Wouldn't i need to run it at like what 160on the blck with a 21 multiplier which would be at 3600? or lower the mulitplier to 20? that would be 3200? Set everything to auto? Why would i change the ram down though? Why cant i leave it running at 1600mhz at 1.66voltage with 8-8-8-24 latency?

160x21=3360mhz and I have found it easier to oc CPU bclk when u down clock ram first because when u change bclk it changes ram also which could give u a bsod where if u down the ram and find you stable oc on CPU first then u can dial in ram. That's the way I was taught but u can do it how u like. Good luck.

Few questions, One when i do get BSOD i am usually playing music off itunes and the sound is drawnen out really long? It just did that now i havnt touched BIOS yet. still at 4ghz i will take everything down now.

I took everything down set it to 1.225 v core. About to chang ram settings
