Just finished building my new rig (in sig). I have g.skill 4gb ddr 800 ram, but I can't get it to run at 400 mhz fsb. I can run at 380x9=3.4 ghz at 1.35 Vcore . I tried running 400x8 = 3.2 at like 1.4 Vcore and I can't boot into vista, I even tried 400x7 = 2.8 ghz at 1.4 vcore, no luck. I tried 390x9 at 1.4 vcore as well, no luck. I thought my ram is rated to run at 400 mhz fsb? Do i need to give my mem more juice? It seems like a memory issue.

Did you mess with the timings at all? Some motherboards do not choose the timings well in auto mode. Try manually setting the timings that the ram is supposed to run at.

Per what you have listed, that would be g.skill 2x2gb F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ 5-5-5-15

5-5-5-15

timings are correct, they're running at 5-5-5-15. i just tried running 400x8 3.2 ghz @ 1.35 cpu vcore and added +0.2 V to mem, FSB, and north bridge. got vista to load, but it freezes/hangs/black-screens after it finishes loading before the welcome screen

You may need to bump up your CPU voltage beyond the 1.35. To hit 3.6 stable, I need to push 1.55V on mine. My VID is 1.3125 so I lost the lottery on the VID front. Temps are the only reason I don't do it day to day. Day to day I'm at 3.42 @ 1.475V.

CPU voltage a lot of times is NOT linear with an increase in FSB. It will probably take more voltage to get higher CPU clock speeds.

i'm trying to take the cpu out of the equation for now, just trying to run at 400 fsb.

i tried running at 400x6 @ 1.35 cpu vcore, and +0.2 V for mem,fsb,northbridge but i get blue screen when i boot.

Your RAM is rated for 1.8 - 1.9V. +.2 on RAM would give you 2.0V. Try 0 or +.1V

Make sure in bios, you're set to 1:1
FSB & MCH at +.2 should be ok

I ran my E6400 400x8 to get 3.2, and 1.3750 orthos stable. I could run 1.3250 and still boot XP, play games, etc, it would only crash during orthos. I tried to do 425x8 (3.4GHz) and all the way to 1.4850 voltage to get orthos to work a few minutes, but the temps shot way too high and I lowered it all back down.

The fact that you're running 400x6, 1.35v and crashing before vista can even boot... there is a problem there...

Sometimes you just get a dud chip and can't OC it.

You're memory is not holding you back. What motherboard are you using btw?

Motherboards vary, some can OC the FSB high, some can't.

i'm running 1:1. tried setting ram to normal and +.1, still did not boot at 400x6

my mobo is p35-ds3L, specs in sig. how are ppl running 425-450 mhz fsb with this combo?! i've seen several ppl do this with similar config as me, i was so sure i would hit 400 fsb easily. i mean i don't mind running at 3.4 ghz, still a good OC, but i feel like i have more room i want to hit 400x9.

Take a look at this thread...Do you have four sticks of ram or two?

If you read his sig, it says 2x2GB

heh, I made the mistake of asking what mobo he had, and is was right in his sig XD Can't stand it when I forget :p

You'll need to increase voltage on your northbridge --- you can check voltages in my thread linked above.

i have 2 sticks. i tried +0.2 v on my NB, i think +0.3 is the highest my mobo will let me go. not even sure if i should go that high, the heatsink on the NB is smaller on this board than the p35-ds3r

i have the same board, and the same hole at 400. try 410+ it'll overclock your ram a little, but gskill is pretty resilient stuff.

do you have the rev 1 or rev 2 of the ds3l?

rev2. tried 401, and 405, no luck. wtffff i want 400 fsb

drop your memory multiplier to 2.0, throw another .1 at the ram, and try 410+. with my board, i could do 450, but not 400. heck, my board will do 500 before it happily does 400.
you just have to find where the hole is, and how big it is.

Make sure your board isn't too hot. I was having similar problems OCing my Q6600 and the blue/black screening was caused by TOO MUCH voltage to the northbridge/fsb/vreg getting too hot.

In my case, dropping the voltage to the FSB/northbridge and getting a fan in there stabilized the system.
