i have an old s478 p4 2.8 thats running at 3.01
my mobo is a asus p4p800 and for overclocking it allows up to 40% in increments of 10%
well right now im at 10% OC but when i raise it to 20%, the system boots up ok and is good for about 10 mins when i play CS but then restarts on me...my friend said it was because of temp spikes but it was running idle around 50C w/ 2 80mm fans and a pci system blower
im getting a new comp in about 2 months but i still want this one to be good enough for gaming....im a newbie at OCing because i just did the easy way and went to the BIOS and OC'd from there...dont know much about voltages so any and all help would be great

50c idle is pretty hot, and means that under gaming conditions (full load) your probably running over 60c. My 2.53 gets unstable when it hits about 62c. Other then that, i would try finding your bottleneck step by step. First relax the timings on the ram and/or raising the voltage on your ram.

Basically you want to find a process that allows you to test one component to its limit at a time, then your final overclock will be the combintation that gets to closest to the maximum overclocks for each component.
 
would watercooling help? im getting a new AMD comp so that one will replace this as the LAN comp

better cooling always helps get a better overclock. I dont think watercooling is a good idea for a lanparty compy though, it adds weight and considerable risk when being jostled around all the time.

my lanparty comp is water cooled, i got metal clamps on the hoses so i aint worried 50 lbs aint that heavy imo
