Getting ready to spend some extra cash here on a new rig I want to buy. Already have the CPU (C2D E6600) and a few other components, but really looking forward to getting some help on selecting memory and mobo to fit my needs.

The system, in the end, will be a SLI rig. 80% gaming, 20% everything else. Have a 24" monitor.

I am not planning to OC to any extreme measures. Just some overclocking.

With that, I am not sure what memory would be best for my needs. Here is a short list I have compiled:

G.Skill

Super Talent

Corsair

Looking for something high performance gaming and stable. good quality. I do not understand the "timings" for memory, so im not sure how to pick which set. Of these, any to stay away from? Any that are really good? Should mention, getting 4GB worth.

I'll start here, but hoping I can get some recommendations on what to look for in RAM.

Much appreciated.

Other than the timings for the memory above, can someone tell me what the major difference is between the manufactures above? Is one better than the other?

Also, i've heard mention about D9 micron chips I believe. SOmeone fill me in on that exactly. I think one of the G.Skill above has those...

Cheers.

What CPU are you going with, again?

Motherboard I'm assuming will be an eVGA 122-CK-NF68-A1/T1, as it's an SLI machine.

CPU matters for what kind of RAM you'll need, though fairly low latency DDR2-800 is fine for most applications. With the newest chips (E6750, E6850) you might want to step up to DDR2-1066, as they start with a 1333Mhz quad-pumped (which is 333Mhz /real/) FSB and 9x multiplier. At 400Mhz FSB that gives you 3.6Ghz on the CPU, and the E6750/E6850 have been shown to go a good bit higher than that, meaning you'd need faster than DDR2-800 to keep linked and synced (ideal) above 3.6Ghz. DDR2-1066 has you covered up to 533Mhz FSB, which is higher than you're going to get with the stock cooling on the 680i board, probably.

The ramlist will tell you which sticks use which chips.

The Micron D9XXX chips are known for their overclocking ability. Most people just buy RAM rated at whatever speed they want, so they don't have to OC the memory.

You can google around for timings, to get a better understanding of them, but the basic thing you need to know is: the lower the better. However, going from CL5 to CL4 isn't really noticeable in everyday usage. Therefore, I don't think paying a huge price premium is worth the lower timings. Then again, deciding whether or not that price premium is huge is entirely up to you.

However, since you're goin for 4GB, I'd suggest 2x2GB sticks instead of 4x1GB sticks:
$226 - OCZ Vista Upgrade 4GB(2x2GB) DDR2-800 OCZ2VU8004GK
$235 - G.SKILL 4GB(2x2GB) DDR2-800 F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ

I agree, go with that A1 eVGA board.

those particular G.SKILL aren't listed on the ramlist. Anyone know if they are D9's?

Yea but he could get x4 1GB sticks for about $125 =P

Yah, but that leaves no room for upgrade, and some boards have problems running with all 4 slots populated. Also, I'm guessing that $125 price tag is the after rebate price. Most rebates are one per household.
