Help for a newbie oc'er

Hello all-

I've been a broke ass for a very long time (which is why I still have a celeron 667) but I've finally gathered enough money to put together a good gaming machine. I've been looking into an AMD 2400+ cpu, but have read that you need to unlock the cpu in order to change the FSB. I've also read that they come unlocked... so I'm not sure which is true. As a newbie oc'er, I'm hesistant to do anything that involves in-depth modification. Im aiming to get a 200 mhz fsb to go nicely with 400 mhz ddr memory.

Does anyone know for sure if the 2400+ comes locked or unlocked?
Are there any other processors out there (around the same price) that I could oc to achieve higher performance than oc'ing the 2400+?

Also, I've been looking into a 9600xt video card to drop in. I havent done much research on oc'ing video cards, but am willing to give it a try. Anyone know if the card I'm looking at is pretty good for oc'ing or if there are better ones for the price?

This is the setup I'm looking to purchase so far (Any suggestions/tips are welcome):

--This is pretty simple get a AMD 2500+ Barton not a 2400+ it can easily be bumped up to a 3200+ by changing the fsb to 200, and voltages higher, all the new amd chips are locked, the unlocked ones cost a bunch.

Yes the 2500+ Barton, if u want an unlocked it costs money and u need to look up the proper stepping code to see if its unlocked, meaning u can change the multipliers

Its ok, i had it for a little bit, better off getting a 9800pro from someone off the F/S here or newegg for cheaper and itll be the same price as a new 9600xt. or u get a 9800se and softmod it to a 9800pro but i'm not even close to an expert at that.

i really don't think latency is gonna make a difference with this ram, their probably close to the same, just leave the ram 1:1 and u should get a 3200+ out of it if u overclock right.
try and get kingston, or corsair or something, i just like them better, someone on this board is always selling that too.

also don't break your budget, if u can't spend more, what u had was fine. u also need a case, with a psu, a heatsink, harddrives, u can probably do this if u wanted for about 500 or over.
 
The best chips for overclocking are the Athlon XP mobile chips. Either the 2500+ M 45w or the 2400+ M 35w would be great for an overclocking system.

All Athlon XP mobile chips come unlocked, but you don't need an unlocked chip to overclock. You can change the FSB without unlocking the chip, but you need an unlocked chip to change the multiplier. (FSB X Multiplier = CPU speed, so an unlocked multiplier gives you more flexability when overclocking)

For the videocard, the 9600XT is a nice card, but if you want to overclock and don't mind learning how to flash a video bios (not that hard with a little research) then a 9800 (non-pro) is what I'd reccomend. They can be turned into a 9800 pro with the flash. 9800pros are gettign cheaper now too, so they are a good choice, some can be turned into 9800XTs.

For the motherboard I'd reccomend the ABit NF7-s for overclocking and general stability, and I'd say go with the kingmax because I do not trust OCZ after their very bad track record of quality. (Many say that OCZ has changed it's ways but I'd stay away until we can be sure that they are safe.)
 
yeah mobiles are unlocked but with normal bartons it depends on the production date which you can find on the number on the chip

it comes in the form 0212 (2002 12th week) or 0345 (2003 45th week) or 0406 (2004 6th week) for example, find out when amd were locking them and when they werent on the net

or just get a mobile, they are lower voltage and can clock a lot better anyway
 
Well thank you guys very much for all your help. I'm gonna go with a 2500+ mobile like you said, then prbly get a 9800 and flash it to a 9800 xt... one thing about that though, don't all 9800se's have only a 128 bit wide bus and 4 pielines? Is it still possible to flash them and make them 9800xt's? I've read places that say its "possible" but havent found anything that says its for sure, more "hit or miss" to quote someone. I think Ill just pay a little bit more and get a 9800 and mod that to an xt. Anyone know if certain models are better than others?

o no prob, ask about flashing in the video section/or a different thread in here. like i said i have no clue but i do know that it is a hit or miss, i'm on a flashed card right now. i didn't do it i bought it from someone that already did its a 9800np to a pro. mobiles are awesome chips to especially for overclocking wish i would have gotten one, would have solved a lot.
