help finding the right case

Hey all, i am in the market for a new case and need some help trying to locate one that i will like. to start off, i am very picky about cases. they need to not only look good, but obviously be very functional. personally i dont like the regular extremely clean looking cases. example the 800d is great inside but i personally just dont like how the front looks, a little too plain for my taste.

the main thing i am after is a door that closes/covers the optical drive bay area. thats mainly the reason i dont like the "Clean" looking cases, they dont look as clean once your throw fan controllers/optical drive bays there. another feature that is required is a case that can fully house watercooling internally. just to give an example of what i like/looked at, i currently have a stacker 832 (has an aluminum door.) i love the look of the raven rv01, but the interior not so much. i dont like the motherboard ports at the top of the case, and also watercooling is basically out of the equation. im really leaning towards the NZXT Phantom as you can put a 240 rad in there, and probably a single 120 somewhere in the drive area or at the bottom. all of these cases have doors that cover/close the optical drive area.


any suggestions would be great. i cant seem to find anything that fits the bill. the phantom is looking promising at this time, but its only draw back is it cant house a full 360 rad. im curious if anyone has seen some brands i may have over looked. im open to anything really, and if you can convince me i dont need a door to cover the 5.25 area (pics would help the argument) then maybe i will go that route. this case will be replacing my stacker in my main rig.

I like Lian-Li cases, most of which are the "clean" cases you don't like. However, they have a couple with doors on them: The PC-B10 and it's full-size equivalent (basically) the PC-A71F.

I understand wanting a door. My previous case was an ancient case of Chieftech design that was black with a blue front. My DVD drive was black and the CD-RW was gray. Without the door it looked stupid. Some cases (like Lina-Li) have aluminum bezels you can buy to replace the plastic in the DVD drive, although that doesn't really help with things like fan controllers.

wow nice, see ive never heard of that brand before and is not a case ive come across. this has made my list for sure.

also ive looked at Lian Li aswell, and their pc80 case looks pretty nice, i am considering that one aswell. those ones you have mentioned look great too, they have a clean look with that door.

the raven RV01 might be back on the table after i found this work log clicky. i think he went overboard with the red, but look at the size of the rad he fit in there. my only fear of this, is ruining the stack cooling effect, but im not positive it would break it or not
 
Lian li has just released a new case the PC-V2120 that has a door, and pre-made cutouts on tops of the case for a 120mm radiators, either a 1x, 2x or 3x 120mm. But, it's is very expensive. $400-$500. I started a thread about it over here.
 
That new Lian-Li case is pretty Boss. Question, what is the advantage to having a removable motherboard tray? How much of your build would you assemble while the tray is outside the chassis?

IMO, A removable mother board tray is the ultimate in convenience. You install the mobo, CPU, heatsink, memory, video card(s), and any other cards, and then slide the whole assembly right into the case. Then all you have to do is attach your various cables. No reaching down into a somewhat limited case. It's especially great for those of us who wear glasses.

But some people don't like them and consider them a waste of space, and something simply not needed. They do add cost to a case, materials, plus the additional engineering necessary to design the case with enough rigidity to stand on its own with the tray in place. I would say the cost of a removable mobo tray adds $50 to cost of a case. That can be an important price point to some.
 
Ya, I have had several cases with removable motherboard trays. If you find a case that has one it's all good, but dont go out of your way to get one. You will only use it a couple of times, and especially in the case of a large water cooling setup, it's really not worth it imo.
