Help finding laptop.

I have a friend looking for a laptop, but is indecisive about what to get for fear of choosing one with too many problems. She's just looking for a solid build that will be well worth her money for around $1000 (give or take a bit). She isn't pIanning on using it for anything hardcore like gaming or anything, but I'm trying to make sure she at least gets something reliable and useable if she decides that she may want to watch a movie on it, or listen to music. Just like a car I'm trying to find her one that will give her the smoothest ride, but I don't know enough right off the top of my head to recommend her a good laptop or manufacturer, and I'm not able to actually go shopping with her to help her pick out one that would be best for her needs. Can anyone give any recommendations? Specifically what would be the most recommended manufacturers to look at. I hear Toshiba's are supposed to be nice, and they seem to be becoming pretty popular. I'm also considering recommending a mac to her, since it would be safer for use on the internet, but they seem to be more costly. Anyway, enough with my rambling, can anyone help?

Velocity Micro. A bit more than 1000 but well worth it.

Look 'em up.:D

Just help my cousin pick out a Toshiba T2080 from Best Buy. It seems pretty well constructed but be sure not to go with any extra options they are trying to sell you, (they were really pushing for the restore disk) you have everything you need in the box (make sure you get some blank CDs to make your own restore CD.) One thing good about purchasing from a retail chain like Best Buy is their service, rarely any retail store would not help an irate customer (not that you want to be an ass about it) stand in line. So if she doesn't mind paying tax (It usually off with shipping.), buying from a reputable retail chain seems like a better bet (plus you could actually see and play with the unit.)

I have had quite a few laptops, and after owning IBM's, I don't think I will ever go back.

I don't think she's looking to customize her own online, just an average buyer looking around in shops. Those do seem pretty nice though, I'd never heard of Velocity Micro.

I'll keep the toshiba in mind and tell her about it. Online it says they have it in stock around here, they also have a really nice vaio in stock for around 1200. Bit higher in price but it has a larger hard drive as well as an extra gig of memory. THe Vaio has a T5500 core 2 duo 2.66ghz I believe. How does this stand up compared to the T2080? core duo?

The t2080 is a core duo with one cache bank disabled so it only has 1meg instead of two.

I've also heard great things about the IBM thinkpads. Haven't owned one, but never heard anybody complain about them. Supposedly really sturdy.

I have been using thinkpads for years and love them, they are sturdy and tech support is great to deal with.

One important thing to remember with IBM is you can extend the warrenty for the same price if you do it before the previous one expires. That means if she is strapped for cash now get the 1 year warranty and in 10 months extend it out 2 more years - above 3 years total the starts to dramatically go up. They don't add any premium for purchasing it later you just have to purchase it before the current one expires.

Is she looking for new or do you think she may be interested in slightly used. If you are looking for a very good multimedia laptop. You should check this out. It's loaded and comes with remote and earphones both never used. For an excellent price (It was purchased from best buy early this year at $815). I hope that helps :)

Hate to say this, but a Mac Book would be prefect for. Loads of power, Mac OS 10, and software that matches her needs perfectly.
