help finding cd key

I have a legit copy of winxp pro, but I lost my winxp disc with the cd key on it. So I was wondering if there was a way to extract the key from my computer. I want to format and re-install the OS, but I don't want to purchase a new copy. Help?
 
Since you lost your disc, keep in mind that the disc you use must be the same as the old old. Oem will need an oem disc, retail will need a retail one.
 
Why does that matter, it's the same installation files right? My copy came from the University, so I'm guessing it's OEM.
 
Not necessarily, the media is different between retail and OEM due to how the key is asked. If you believe it's OEM then find a OEM installation media.
 
The keys for each version are different If your key will work, it will be accepted, right where you type it in. if not, an invalid key error message will show up ,and the set up aborts. Not 100% positive about this, but academic software might use yet another key.
 
I think the university CD's are volume licience (corporate versions). Your product code may not work on a retail or OEM version.
 
So I need the corporate version? Is there some way to verify which version it will be valid?

It's probably a VLK version, as stated. Why not use the above software to get your key, and then ask your school for another copy of the media (only the media). That shouldn't be a problem at all.
 
Well it's actually from when my sister went to university, but she's graduated.
 
It's actually illegal to use academic software once you leave the university. Not that I care, but if you have a copy that passes validation, it might not be such a hot idea to try a reformat, without the original disc.When you go to the update page, the fist thing it does is to install a validation tool.If your copy fails that, you are then directed to make a phone call to MS to validate.
 
I find this fishy and we may be trying to help someone install XP for free with a stolen key. I won't go further to help.
 
Believe whatever you want, but I'm being honest. It's my sister's computer, she lost the disc when she moved. I'm just trying to fix it up for her.
 
For another little bit of information, to anyone who has lost their CD key but still have their CD, you can call Microsoft and they'll ask for some of the numbers on the CD itself and look up your CD key.. I did this when I lost my key that was attached to the plastic wrap on my version of XP.. Why they put it there is beyond me, but I got my cd key back so I'm happy.
 
I have downloaded the Game and when installing am asked for CD key - available from http://www.joinfear.com/main. I have had numerous attempts to obtain the key but constantly get the following screen. Is this message server based at their end or is there an error at my end. ---- HELP!!
