I don't know anything about PSU's. Back in the Oldern Days

a PSU was just a PSU and it was just a matter of getting enough power for all the peripherals you inteded to install into a system. It seems now that you really have to pay attention to specs.

So I'm having some trouble finding a Powersupply that has the -5v pin. Or do most newer PSU's have these by default?

My MSI K8N Diamond Plus Motherboard requires a -5v Pin in order for it to function properly. ( Something to do with the onboard SB Audigy).

Right now I'm looking at this PSU Antec TruePower 2 550W

Does it have the -5v Pin??

I really don't want to spend over 100$ for a PSU. So I was hoping this would do the trick.

The Red Cables coming from the power supply = 5V compared to ground (black wire). If you want -5V, just connect the a black wire to the positive terminal and a red wire to the negative terminal, and whammy! -5V!! simple as pie

Course... your PSU might blow up from reversing polarities

LOL I'd rather buy a PSU that already has the necessary capabilities. Blowing up a PSU along with the Motherboard and everything connected to it, is just not an option. Thanks for the info though :)

check the OCZ Powerstreams. I have a 420w Powerstream and it has a -5v line on it. Not sure if they're all like that though. Mine is a bit older, no PCI-E power connector :(, so ymmv

You don't so much have to worry about a -5v line, just match the style of power supply to the style the motherboard needs. As long as the power cable from the supply fits correctly on the motherboard and has sufficient power, you will be fine.

If he wants his sound to work he does ;)

The SuperFlower/TTGI Plug-N series has a -5v and a large 12v rail.......among other supplies. What sysetm are you building?

Nevermind guys, but thanks.

My current rig was flaking out so I went out and got the OCZ Modstream 520W. It has the -5v I needed and more. I'll be good to go when I setup my Diamond Plus.

I'm kind of glad my computer flaked out actually. My computer was shutting down randomly today, right after I posted this thread. When I restarted the computer I wasn't getting power to my Mouse, KB, and 2 DVD Drives. Apparently my NB fan was siezed up real good and my old Thermalright SLK947SU was full of dust and gunk (I'm a smoker;)) So I got a new NB fan and picked up the OCZ Modstream while I was there.

A funny thing happened to me while I was cleaning out my Rig today.Ever get too close to a 5700RPM Vantec Tornado Fan. Holy crap, the damn thing nearly took my finger off!!! It cut me up good. I was checking the NB fan and my finger strayed a little to close to the tornado! Man,I'll never do that again.

lol...yeah...watch those fans. Those TMD fans (the ones with the 4 motors on each corner of the fan, and no dead spot in the center) are just about as bad. The one I had tore half my fingernail off, and it spins at 4800rpm.

glad you got things working again.

My X-Finity 500W has a -5V as well.

I'm an MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI motherboard owner and it also "originally" had the -5V requirement.

This is actually the same board as the Diamond (hence the 7100 portion of the part name and BIOS intercompatibility).

My point is that all new boards no longer require the -5V as a small regulator has been added to the board. Take a look close to where the Creative Labs chip is and you should notice a modded regulator soldered to the board that looks like a transistor (sticks out and is not surface mount).

If you see this, you don't need -5V and can go with one of the nice new Enermax supplies.

I've got the Enermax EG565P-VE FMA Sli Ready supply that you can pickup for about $83.00 on Newegg.com (This supply is nVIDIA certified on their SLIzone.com website).

If you don't have this chip, MSI will add it for you or you can try exchanging it with your vendor.
