Hello, I have a particular storage need and was wondering if you guys had some ideas about how I might achieve my goals. I'm trying to figure out a solution which involves a 16 bay sata 2 rack mount.
What I need:
- Security/Redundancy though Raid 5 or Raid 6.
- Expandable storage (start out with 3 drives work up to 16)
- Ability to make all the drives appear as one mass storage
I'm on a limited budget but I'm in the process of putting together a file sever for personal use. Using a 16 bay rackmount I'm trying to figure out how I can have a flexiable setup such that I could easily add additional storage space (as needed) while retaining a Raid 5/6 backed system.
I've been looking for a software raid solution, but havn't found a way to do the raid migration/storage expanion.
At this point I've looked at hardware raid controller such as Promise 8x sata 2 raid controller or rocketraid 2320 8x sata 2 raid controller to handle the drives but i'm not sure how to proceed.
Ideas and recommendations would be appreciated.
Also it would be nice to be able to use drives of different sizes but I'm not sure under what circumstances this would be achieveable.
