Help figuring out a raid solution.

Hello, I have a particular storage need and was wondering if you guys had some ideas about how I might achieve my goals. I'm trying to figure out a solution which involves a 16 bay sata 2 rack mount.

What I need:
- Security/Redundancy though Raid 5 or Raid 6.
- Expandable storage (start out with 3 drives work up to 16)
- Ability to make all the drives appear as one mass storage

I'm on a limited budget but I'm in the process of putting together a file sever for personal use. Using a 16 bay rackmount I'm trying to figure out how I can have a flexiable setup such that I could easily add additional storage space (as needed) while retaining a Raid 5/6 backed system.

I've been looking for a software raid solution, but havn't found a way to do the raid migration/storage expanion.

At this point I've looked at hardware raid controller such as Promise 8x sata 2 raid controller or rocketraid 2320 8x sata 2 raid controller to handle the drives but i'm not sure how to proceed.

Ideas and recommendations would be appreciated.

Also it would be nice to be able to use drives of different sizes but I'm not sure under what circumstances this would be achieveable.

Unless you are doing multiple Arrays, you need to use the same size drives or all the drives will be used to the capacity of the smallest drive.

The 2320 is great because you can use up to four cards for a maximum of 32 drives in a single array. It supports OCE(Expansion), appears to the OS as a single drive, and does Raid5.

Consider Linux + XFS for easy expansion. (XFS does not require a partition table).

Oh, a UPS would be a good idea too.
 
your 3 points

1.) raid 5 or 6 will give you redundancy, not security. Don't forget to back up.
2.) Most the newer good, raid cards I have seen support Online Capacity expansion so it shouldn't be too hard to find a board that supports this.
3.) This is exactly what raid does. The drives appear to the OS as a single, large volume.

So I'm looking at getting:

2.5 Ghz Celeron D w/ some mobo
512 or 1gm or ram
3xSegate 500gb HD's
2320 RocketRaid

1500VA apc

does that seem about right?

what mobo would you recommend?
