HELP! i just got done putting together me C2D E6300 and its failing Prime95 in less than 1 minute, even when it is not overclocked it is failing. any suggestions?

its all at stock speeds, and it fails ram is ddr2-800 running at 800, even if i oc the FSB to 400 so its matched with a 1:1 it fails prime95 still, im running 32m super pi x2 (two super pi running at same time) so far looking good, anywho, how do you use memtest?

download the iso, burn it to disc, and boot off it. it'll go by itself. takes under half an hour a test (can't remember exactly. came back an hour later and it finished 2 rounds already).

edit: what motherboard are you using? I have issues with my motherboard and stability with some of the dividers, which you have suspected as well, running 1:1 @ 400fsb. what if you try 1:1 or 4:5 at stock 266fsb and effectively underclock your ram? also, you using enough voltage for your ram? 800 would require probably at least 2.0v. jedec spec's only 1.8v so if you're on defaults, youre not providing enough volts to the ram

what are your system specs?

you might need more voltage (than stock 1.8v) on your ram to run at its rated SPD.

I'm going to guess overheating? If not, time for an RMA. Try replacing your RAM first, then CPU.

This sounds to me like a bad stick of RAM.
Exactly what I was thinking, hence my "try the RAM first" comment. Has all the makings of a bad stick/set. Try running each stick individually and see if one fails but one passes, you'll know which is bad.

What kind of PSU you running? Make sure that it's up to par and not some cheap-job.

yeah, ram is definitely on the top list of suspicions. Try memtest and see what's up.

here are my specs
CPU: C2D E6300
GPU: ATI X1600 Pro 512MB DDR2 PCI-E
RAM: Patriot 2GB DDR2-800 with eased timing 5-5-4-9 (Got it for only $130 at Fry's)
MB: Gigabyte GA-965P-S3
Cooling: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
PSU: Antech Neo HE 500
not sure what is going on, its not overheating, ran dual super pi no problem. temps only got to like 40-50c on each core. guess i will have to try memtest when i get a chance.

hmm you did well on the ram :) memtest is real easy to burn an iso and it chugs along on its own. just burn it to disc and boot it one night before you goto bed. you'll get the results you want to see by morning. Also, check all your bios settings. Maybe try to default all settings and update the bios.

What is the ram specified to run at? 5-5-4-9 are kind of odd timings.
I guess you have this stuff: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820220174 which is rated for 5-5-4-9

usually the last # is close to the sum of the first 3.
ie:
3-3-3-9
4-4-4-12
5-5-5-15

Maybe try 5-5-5-12 for the hell of it. Timings aren't that important on Core 2 systems in the first place, and the thing that makes the big difference is that first #. Which at 5 is already the "slowest"

Maybe your CPU is just not good at math. Maybe it excels at art or even history.

:D

haha, that is what i'm thinking, stupid calculations haha. going to give memtest a try and see what happens
