Help extracting data from Windows98 PC LOL

So my coworker has this incredibly old computer that uses windows 98 which has a floppy drive, a CD drive that wouldn't read modern versions of the CD, and a USB (1.0 I think) port that my seagate external cannot connect to lol.(seagate never made device driver for windows 98) so how in the world can I extract information out of this old machine? we are talking about 3-4 GBs of information lol.

I am thinking about buying a more modern optical drive that still uses IDE cable and burn the data on couple CDs.

Any suggestions?
 
How about pulling out the HDD and putting it in the new system (other system)? It got to be at least an IDE drive, right?
 
Well depending on how modern of a PC the OP has, he might not have PATA connections on his motherboard. If not, then I'd suggest spending the money on an external hard drive enclosure. Wouldn't spend too much money on it, then just connect it to your modern system and burn it to a DVD.

If you do have PATA connections on your motherboard, then just connect it to your motherboard directly and run it as a slave. Then follow the rest of the advice above.
 
yes it's an IDE drive. My system is running on windows 7 professional. If i run the HDD on windows 7 don't i have to reformat the harddrive first? which defeats the purpose of transfering the files? oh and yes i do have PATA connection on my mobo. So i guess i am going to try running it as a slave drive? this way i dont have to reformat it inorder to be able to access it with windows 7 right?

sorry i am kinda noob when it comes to hard drives.
 
No you do not have to format or reformat it to. If you have an IDE header on your motherboard, then just hook it up. Do not boot from the hard drive, boot into your W7 install. W7 will recognize the drive as a storage device. You'll then be able to access all the contents. (Might have to give W7 permission, but being W98, I doubt it.)
 
From Win 98 it should be FAT32 format (maybe FAT16 if <4GB but doubt it) and won't have any permissions/security to trip you up. Only thing I can think my be an issue is master/slave jumper settings on the drive. Most likely it will already be set to Master and will just work, but a few had Master/Slave/and "Single" settings. Basically though, as long as its not one of the oddballs, it plugs in to your PATA connector, master/slave jumpers are set right, and your Mobo doesn't try to boot off of it instead of your Win7 drive you should just see it as another drive letter in computer.

Get a SATA/IDE dock, plug the Win98 HDD into the dock, plug the dock into a relatively modern machine, backup galore. :D
