Ok, I'm totally new to crossfiring and as such don't really know what I'm doing. It would be helpful if I could find some sort of tutorial on this, but I can't find a decent one.
Here's my situation:

I've got two Sapphire HD4850 1GB ram cards. I've got them plugged into my motherboard (ASUS M3A79-T) that has a 790FX chipset.
My motherboard has 4 PCI-E slots, but says that for the ideal setup with two video cards I would put them in slot 1 and 3 (they support x16). However, I can't get the ribbon cables to connect the two cards together because they are about half an inch too short. If I put the card in the PCI-2 slot then they only run at x1.
Do i need to use the cables?

Yes you need it for crossfire. Get a new crossfire cable. Look for the flexible kind.

by the cables, do you mean the crossfire ribbon that is included with the cards? if so, then yeah you do.

The kind that I have is flexible (it's a ribbon cable). Is there another kind? And if so, where can I get one. I've checked on several sites and can only find the same kind I have: A ribbon cable that is about 3 inches long. I need more like 5 inches to span the gap between the cards.

Ok, nevermind about the cable length. I'm a moron. I found longer ones packaged with my extra motherboard wires.
Ok, I guess my only other question is do I need to change any BIOS settings?

tclower: Not usually, I've had 2 CF rigs and never had to, but your instance could be different. The best way to tell is once you get into windows, right click your ati logo, and look and see if there's 2 items listed, also, you can check for crossfireX to be enabled in your CCC.

Well, it seems like it's working. The only thing that's a little strange is when I'm in CCC under the crossfire menu, there is a button (i forgot what exactly it says, detect GPU or something) that says it will show the status of my cards. When I click it a huge "1" shows up in the middle of the screen, then disappears. There is a status box, under the button, but nothing appears in there.
