Help detecting SATA drives

I currently have 3 IDE drives and a cdrom drive and they're all connected by IDE cables.

I just got a sata HD and i plugged it in, but windows wont see it.

"SATA BOOTROM" is enabled in bios

I enabled the "fasktrak raid controller" in the bios and it detects the SATA drive in the boot screen, but windows doesnt see it.

any help?


i have daemon tools installed also
 
Install the drivers for it. Check you mobo CD or go to the mobo's site to make sure you have the latest.

edit : drive shows up in bios fine...in the boot order part
 
Is this drive on a pci controller? Try the onboard VIA sata, or move it to a different slot.
 
no, its not on pci controller...connected directly to HD.


i just disabled the promise controller in the bios now.
 
Plug it into the VIA sata ports. Looking at pics of the board, it looks like the two nearer the IDE connector should be connected to the VIA southbridge. Since the driver for that seems to be working (see devmgmt screenshot) I'd suggest plugging it in there.

yeap, i just realized that too.

i had it plugged into the RAID ports and thats why i was having all these problemos.

Unlike VIA, which only needs on set of drivers for it's SATA/RAID chip, Promise has a RAID and an IDE/SATA driver and you must select RAID or IDE operation in the BIOS. You have to have the correct driver installed for your application. Since you had the RAID driver installed and were only using a single drive.......no worky. Install the IDE driver and your golden. Either way, as someone who has your mobo, the VIA SATA controller is faster by 10-15%, so stick with that.
 
bleh more problems.

the drive shows up fine in disk manager and when i try to initialize it, bam the pc shuts down!

tried it in safe modea nd the same thing happens!



right after i right click->initialize, system shuts down immediately
 
Diconnect the drive, install the VIA RAID drivers with the chip enabled. They have the separate 5.30C drivers or you can select them during the install of the latest Hyperion Driver suite. At viaarena.com of course.
 
ok, got the new drivers and it still does the same thing.

i go into disk management and tell it to initialize the drive and boom, the computer is rebooting.

when it reboots, it hangs on the windows loading screen for 5mts+ and it hangs in the disk management window whenever I try and go back in.

however, these are both gone when the sata drive is disconnected
 
For now, I'd get the IDE drivers for the Promise controller and install those. Set the controller to IDE in the BIOS, boot and install drivers. Shut down and install the drive. I don't know how much you know about he flakiness of some of the BIOS' for this board or this board in general, but since the VIA controller is affected by OC'ing, your OC could be having some affect. The Promise controller isn't affected by OC'ing. One example is if I go over 262FSB, my hard drive performance drops about 20%(PATA or SATA), so that's as high as I go. Also, if your drive is SATAII capable, make sure it's jumpered for SATAI since that's what these controllers are. Good luck.
 
you're absolutely correct !!

i turned off the overclocking and i can now initialize the drive!


now its a matter of seeing how high i can go without messing up this drive :(
 
Glad it's working. Based on how your VIA controller was affected, I'd benchmark it at the maximum OC you discover the VIA controller can handle with HD Tach and then put it on the Promise controller and see if you get similar performance. If so, at least you can leave it on the Promise controller and get your OC back. One other quick thing. What is your HTT set to in your BIOS when OC'ing? If it's at 1000, try 800 or 600 to see if it won't reboot on you using the VIA controller at your original OC.
 
i'm at 225x9 (2025) at 1.45v now and everything is working fine.

i'll try the HTT next
 
finally figured out how to run it through the promise controller.

i kept on getting "could not start device" error for the promise controller and it was because i had at some time installed the raid drivers unknowingly and it would not take the sata drivers and kept reverting back to the raid ones.

finally, i told it to manually take the sata driver (because the sata driver brings up the may not be compatible prompt) and it works!

back to ocing!
 
Good deal. Did changing the HTT help with the VIA controller? When you have some free time on your hands, maybe see what kind of HD Tach benchmarks you're getting to compare performance as now that you have the correct drivers for both, you can switch SATA ports back and forth at will.
 
actually, performance doesnt really matter for this drive as its purely for storage.
