I have an extra $300 and would like to upgrade my main pc. I am looking for a motherboard that can last me at least 2 years and will allow at least probably 1 or more processor upgrade. I cant decide which option looks better.

Athlon 64 2800+ Socket 754 Retail - $139
Chaintech VNF3-250 nForce3 250 - $73
Corsair 512MB PC3200 CAS2.5 - $79
This looks like the best overall performance option right now, but future upgrades do not look as promising since things seem to be going to s939.

Celeron D 320 Processor 2.40GHZ - $71
Abit IS7-E i865PE - $75
Corsair 1GB Kit DDR400 PC3200 CAS2.5 - $158
While the processor isnt on par with the A64 from the reviews i've read, the new celerons sure look nice when it comes to overclocking and I can later switch over to a P4 depending on my budget 6 months from now.... sweet, sweet HT... Plus the lower cost of the processor allows for some extra memory.


Suggestions?
 
Hah, dont laugh to much. I currently have a celeron 600 at 900 and 384 mb memory. My reason for upgrading it the upcoming release of HL2, EQ2, and WoW.
 
No matter what your current setup, I would try like hell to get up to a socket 939 A64. There is only a $40 difference in price for retail A64 3000+ on newegg (socket 754 vs. 939). The socket 939 is the way to go if you want good performance now AND upgradeability.
 
I have considered that some, especially with the availability of nforce4 boards happening soon. I already have $150-200 budgeted for a new video card so pci-e would not be a problem either. I just wonder how buggy the first boards will be.
 
I dont do any gaming but I just ordered the first setup you mentioned, VNF3-250 and A64 2800+ for $215 shipped. The reason I got it was because ive read its quicker than the Athlon setup and it was only $20-$40 more than what I had planned to get. If you go with the A64 s939 3000+, its gonna be around $390 because the mb's start at $130. I had a budget of $500 and spent around $575. :)
