My computer a few weeks ago decided tro just turn off while i was messing with the front USB ports (which are somehow broke) Now i tried to turn it back on, no go. The Mobo has a green light on it when i flip the power supply switch, but when i hit the front button to turn the computer on nothing happens at all. Is it a bad front switch or something else? i cant take the case apart to check, because i have no idea how...

Let me know if anyone can help me.

Thanks

mayeb you removed that little power sw (switch) cable that connects the power on button to the mobo?

I looked around, it doesnt look removed at all, but ill give it another check. I think it has something to do with the switch but someone also told me it could be the Power supply..

i moved the pins around a lot.. i dont think it has anything to do with the switches, i tried changing them quite a few times using the rest as power and ish.. nothing will kick it on. green light on MoBo is on, but i can't get it to turn on. Any ideas? Is it a bad Mobo/ I'll be prettttty pissed if it is. I had to replace it after i had this comp like one week.

************** Warning Don't Try Unless You Understand What I'm Talking About*********************

Well since you are at hardocp I’m guessing you like to tinker with things, so was wondering if you have tried to start the computer from the motherboard by using a screw driver to complete the circuit that normally would be completed by the 'ON' button on the front of your case.

What motherboard do you have?

You can also see if your power supply works by doing something similar... :D

Again don't be an idiot and try unless you know what your doing down there

This goes for girls too...

I have a p4c800, i'm not too much of an idiot and actually know thins abotu computers, so i could give that a try. How does it work?

I think there's a strong chances its the PSU.. It didnt have the best coolin while it was at the dorm, and the PSU is a generic brand that came with the case.

well download the manual from asus website go to page 58

18.system panel connectors

look at the diagram, find the atx power switch, you will complete that circuit by using a screw driver or something like it, to complete the circuit. touch the pin ground to the pwr pin

once you connect those two pins with the screw driver it should power on...
don't need to keep the screw driver there to make it work

but u said u had a crappy PSU so i'm betting its that i would go and spend money on a new one anyways...

I don't remember off the top of my head who to check the PSU sorry

there isnt enough information to attempt to determine if the PSU was overtaxed with your config and simply "wore out"
that would require your full config and the PSU make and model

when you say "messing with the USB" was this when it was on?
what was done?
USB is a powered interface, you could have a short

as to other reasons
check that your CPU fan is plugged into the proper header
thats a thermal cutoff, protection for a fan failure
same thing with a heatsink being improperly mounted but generally youd see the HSFan spinup and then stop
if the CPUs internal temp sensor was cutting out the power

another thing.. not liekely this is it but find some place on your mobo where theres 3 pins and a jumper. Now if we say it looks like this now: * |* *| then move the jumper one pin to the left/right: |* *| * now push the power button, good now move the jumper back at * |* *| and try power on again.. this should fix your bios or something... :S prolly not it but what the heck..

cause i like getting yelled at... :D

but does anyone remember what two pins on psu u connect to test to see if it will turn on.

my friend did this for a PSU of his that he needed to test...

green & any black

POW_ON & Ground

but put an old optical; or HDD on the supply
most need some load in it for it to work

Well the front USB ports broke after walking on something plugged in them.
I had my printer hooked up into the fron tone (it would still hook up but just not be secured enough) and i believe i kicked it or something a little bit and the computer went off completly.

I still have to try those other things. I emailed the manufacturer and ish to see about replacements because i think all of these parts have a 3 year warranty

well its possible that you shorted the port
and that a fuse in the supply blew, hopefully protecting components
Id say you have a bit of crossparting to do inorder to determine whuch components mught be good

you still havent said what your config is or what PSU it is

Oh yeah.. lol

p4c800 deluxe mobo
2.4c P4
1gig corsair XMS
9600 vid card

PSU is a crappy one that came int he case (aspire x dreamer case i think) it's a Turbolink power supply

replace the supply its a very likely a Deer
(as bad as it gets and dangerous)

please list the rest of your config
drives, fans ect

I have 4 fans, 2 in the back one on top and one on the side. one on back is intake, other 3 are exhaust. 40 gigabyte harddrive, DVD rom, DVD burner, TV tuner card, floppy drive (mostly generic stuff).

thats about it. Maybe i'll go to comp usa tonight and pick up a new PSU.. I don't overclock or anything so 300 watts should be enough for my system. I'm hoping its just the PSU or just the Mobo that went bad. Anything more will definately suck ass.

Replaced the supply and it didnt fix anything. eh.. starting to think i at least need a new motherboard, and who knows what else.

This sucks a lot.
