Help, Computer Reboots or Blue Screens!

Recently my fan on my video card went out, I RMA'd it and while I wait for my new video card, I bought a 9600se so i cloud get it up.

about two months ago my pc started acting wired!

when I would reboot, it would start to load windows and reboot, then after a couple of times boot fine.

Thougth that I needed a windows rebuild and ignored it.

About a week ago I noticed my computer cpu fan was running on lower rpm's. So It was a sat , i went and bought a used retail cpu for my p4 (all that I could find in twon) and ordered a super sielent 4pro l.

When I replaced the old cpu fan with the used it, it noticed some dark coloring on the cpu, and it looked worse when I put on my new fan. When I first built my computer I put some grease on but I didn't have any when I put the used coolier on, and I ordered some when I ordered my new coolier.

So I put on my new coolier, put in my new temp video card and everything looks fine.

the coolier loooks good, seems to be working fine, cpu runs at low 30c's

Boot the system, reboots, reboots trying to get into safe mode, try agian, boots into windows, reboots within 3 min, contuies to do this while I reinstall drivers and so on. sometimes saying IRQ not equall or just reboots or win32.sys error.

No luck, I think that my windows must be bad, so I reinstall.

Format go's fine, copies files, asks to reboot.

Setup starts fine, but reboots, restarts setup gets to installing devices reboots, does this randomly.

So Now I think that a hardware device is bad.

I try another power supply, still does it, try another video card, still does it, tried one stick of ram, tried switching sticks of ram, even diff slots, still does it. tired diff hard drive, still does it.

I am running out of ideas.

Is there a way to test cpu/ motherboard from dos or bootable cd?

Does anyone have any idea's?

I need help, any would be great.

update, removed all grease, artic silver, from the cpu and heatsink.

How much should i put on?
 
I followed the directions on their website, and it still blue screens.

Any ideas?
 
Blue screens are usually typical of bad ram..

Are you overclocking or running stock?

How many sticks of ram do you have?

Have any other ram sticks about you might be able to swap with?

I figure BSOD are either RAM issues or NB..

try memtestx86 tests 5 and 8 for 20-30 passes a piece....

let us know.
 
Try using a different hard drive. or see if you can pop it in another computer and do a surface scan. Im thinking you might have bad sectors. when windows boots, it creates a page file on the hd for when you use too much ram, if the sector where its creating the page file is bad, might go blue screen on you or freeze.

Have you tried changing ide/serial cables?
 
yes I trieda a hard drive, and a ide cable.

now i am running mem test.


it's saying that there are bad blocks on both sticks at the same 7fffffff


anyone know if that is a known error?

I hate to send back the ram with out a good test, is there other ram testers out there that can boot?

that is a known error, we now know it's broken. memtest is _THE_ test, don't bother. the ram is bad.
 
I enabled pat and now the mem test isn't having errors, but i am still blue screening.

ideas?

any other mem tests to run?
 
is there a good way to test a motherboard and cpu? like dos or linux bootable tests?
 
The motherboard can't really be tested by itself. You need to make sure the CPU is fine and then the RAM is fine, and that the Video Card and Peripherals are fine, and that the PSU is fine, and finally.. if all those are fine, and something is messed up.. its most likely your Motherboard.

As for the CPU... Prime95 allows you to target load the CPU, or the RAM, or both... once in windows... it's also good to use Motherboard Manager to monitor the rails of your PSU while in idle and while in load.

pat is Performance Acceleration Technology.

I wish I knew of a good bootable standalone diagnostic utility.

I will have to have my ram tested, but i hate to have that tested and not the cpu/ motherboard as well.
 
Update

Just ran the ram in a IBM think centre PC.

Both sticks worked fine by them selfs and running together, they both showed the right amount of ram and timmed out correctly, no problems.

CPU?
