Hello, it's me again. Now, my stupid computer froze and then had a corrupt windows files that prevented it from starting, so I had to parallel install windows XP again! Now that I have done that, I am just trying to make my computer customized to what it once was again... but, for some reason, it is really... slooooow. It is direly slow, I mean, I can't scroll down webpages without it chopping up on me!!

I installed the directx9.0c drivers and had to install windows update and got all of those updates in. BUT I'm not sure if my system recognizes my video card. I am just saying this in theory, because it tried running powerstrip on my old OS onto my new one, and it was unsuccessful because it couldn't detect a video card or something, but I could have to reinstall the program first.

Now, everything is very slow, I cant hold windows boxes and move them around without extreme choppy, and I am only thinking the last possible thing I could think of is to update the nvidia drivers. I don't think it is the processor (intel) for it is at a low CPU usuage under the processes. I've also noticed that my processes count has dropped by 4. I know the reason of at least 1 maybe 2 (norton) but about the video card? I am so confused!!!

Also... on a side note... I was wondering how I can have it so Add or Remove programs displays all my programs instead of the ones I have just installed recently on my new OS, rather all my programs including the ones I installed with the old OS. The old OS is inactive, but still is holding files. I haven't touched it really quite yet, as in deleteing content for space, but I really need some advice guys. I thought this would be the perfect place, maybe not thread, to put it. I am sorry if anyone might not like the place I put the thread but I didn't know a better place. Thank you all for your support, this forum is great! Happy holidays!

once you reinstall XP over another installation all the registry links and stuff are broken..so you can't "uninstall" them..just delete the folders

did you do a virus scan? because if norton stopped appearing under the processes...and you had windows files corrupted...sounds an awful lot like a virus

I would like to add... I had the computer working find today, but it froze up after I turned it on (after being inactive and on carpet with no wires or plugs into it in a closet for two weeks) it was fine for a few, I closed some annoying programs, but left for about 10 mins. Came back, it was completely frozen, keyboard wouldn't work, nor mouse, caps lock wouldn't light up when I hit it even!

So you said broken links? So it is not possible for me to display all my programs in add or remove programs? If so, that sucks. I was also curiously wondering if there was a way (as my computer used to be but for some reason it isin't on) to make a little box around your icon's text, so it is easier to read. You know, like if you had a black background, all your text would have a black box around it and the text would be some color other than black. I don't have those boxes and I don't know why.

I also didn't install "over" it, but rather next to it. I installed under a different folder so all the old files are still intact yet the new ones have been added in a newer foloder.

If I have done this, is the virus (if any) still active, or could be? If so, I had better get my butt movin' and install norton on my computer!

The number one thing I am concerned about right now is how slow my computer is right now. Does anyone know what could be causing this slow down?? This really sucks.

if you know what your video card is...then go the manufacuters website and download there latest drivers and then reboot and you should be fine.. some of the top manufature websites...

ATI technologies
www.ati.com

Nvidia Graphics
www.nvidia.com

and if it is onboard graphics it might eather be Intel of Ati..if it IS onboard graphics its probrably be intel..
www.Intel..com

It dosnt matter if you installed over it, next to it, or on anouther hdd. your programs are not being reconized by Windows..and you need to REinstall them. and go into program files and delete all the folders that arnt showing up in ADD remove hardware....and also check your CPU cooling..a lockup can occure if your cooling on your computer is not at resonable temps...

why don't you just wipe the hard drive .. and do a clean install of windows .. ??

that would be the best thing to do as far as getting rid of any kind of viruses and such...and for a fresh start for your HDD...

Yes but I don't have the time to make enough back ups and I don't want to restart and such.

Now I have downloaded the drivers, and it was a SUCCESS!!! It detected hardware during installation and now my video card works, it's not slowing down! BUT, I need to know how to get those boxes around the the text in the icons. I hate how it looks right now, I don't know how to change it and it is very annoying and hard to read. It isin't need to know actually, but I still would like to know how to do it here instead of contacting dell again.

Thank you all for your help, this is the best site ever!

Hehe... I like the bliss background too much (that background in all the xp commercials with the hill and sky, looks nice)

I'm sorry if I am getting snobby, I am still shaking and have been for the past 3 hours, just trying to make my computer look the same. This whole ordeal was a huge hit to my HD for some reason. It, overall, has taken a hit of about 3 gigabytes! That leaves me below 200mb!!! That's after deleting things I already had!

WHY DID I BUY A STUPID 20 GB HDD, WHY NOT THAT 40?? IT WAS RIGHT THERE!!!!!!

grrr...

yeah you probly know what im going to recomend next..a new HDD....there is HDDs that are 200GB that are 80 bucks...get a few hold on to some data!

I have no idea how to install it while making it work with the other hd. I am so cluless on that. Like, would I need to install windows on that new HD too or what?

Do I need to get something else with the HD or everything I need to install the HD, comes WITH the HD box or what? Thanks for your help.

P.S. I am trying to play World of Warcraft and I need to download like this 1 gb patch or something, which is really weird, but I don't have enough space to do it!
