I'm looking at getting this case...

http://www.atechfabrication.com/products/HTPC_case.htm

...and I want to get a VFD for it while I wait for it to be made. They say the case fits "a Matrix Orbital 4x20 display such as the VK204-25 or similar size displays". The VK204-25 costs about $115 USD (lowest I can find). I was wondering if there are any other VFDs that would fit? A graphical VFD would be sweet!

That case is too sexy.

Go for the gusto and get a 4 line 40 character VFD.
Those Graphical VFDs are a huge pain in the ass to program.

Yeah graphical VFDs are nice and add flair, but how much do you really look at your VFD anyway? I got a 2 X 20 VFD and when I bring my case to LAN parties, people ask me about it all the time.

Yeah, because of this I'm kinda thinking of not getting the VFD at all. But I have a strong feeling that I'll regret it if I don't get it. Also, its $35 for the bracket and about $115 plus shipping for the VFD... $160 seems pretty steep to me. Is there a cheaper VFD that will do the same job?

Another thing... to get the VFD to display stuff I'll need to run some software all the time right? When I play games or watch movies on my computer I usually shutdown any extra processes running. For you guys out there that are all about performance and have VFDs, isn't it pointless to have if your VFD is off while you are using your computer?

Yes you need interface software which takes time to program when you set it up.

And NO you don't need to turn off the software as it takes little to no processor time to run.

I mean it's cool to have it displaying MP3s, tempratures, CPU and memory utilization, game scores, etc etc.

You can program it to say about anything. But the big question is, do you really look at it half of the time. No I never do. Accually I have not used mine in like months. It just sits there and shows a preprogrammed welcome title with the name of my computer and whatnot. It's more FLASH then anything. It does bring attention to your case, but if you are not using it for critical monitoring applications then it's kinda useless.

This is for an HTPC, but no... I can't see myself looking at the thing except to say how pretty it is and to think about my $160 I'm out. Even though money isn't really an issue right now, I don't want to waste it either. Do you feel your VFD was a waste of money? How long does it last if its always on, displaying the same letters for hours on end?

those matrix orbital VFD's are alright but if you have the money..
go for a graphic VFD from noritake...

those kick some serious ass
