Help choosing monitors (crt)

I'm currently looking for a new monitor (or two, my current ones are dieing) The "plug and play"ness of crt's is attractive, as well as the fact that i know nothing about lcds, or have ever used one.

Anyway, i found this site, and i was wondering if you guys could give me some advice.

The fw900 is out of my price range, ideally i'd be looking at under 200 or 300 since i'll be buying two, most likely. B-grade is allowable as long as the picture is clear.

21-24 inchers: http://futureconnexion.com/_wsn/page5.html

17 and 19: http://futureconnexion.com/_wsn/page4.html

Since i'm on the topic, i also found

http://www.retrobox.com/rbwww/home/search_results_pc_monitors.asp?bin_id=world

which seems to have alot of very, very cheap monitors (as well as other comp parts)

As a side thing, how many of you think i should wait and suffer through the color fading crt's and get some lcds?

If you guys can't help, it's fine, and now maybe i gave somebody else cheap solutions to their monitor problems :D

That isn't an issue. Get a CRT if you want to save money, and/or you want the very best picture quality. LCDs win on form factor and for viewing text.

Get one with a trinitron tube in it and you should be very happy. The shadow mask tubes I would avoid.

A CRT takes a *long* time to experience phosphor degradation....5-15 years under most cases. It's not a major concern.

my 1280x1024 monitor doesn't maintain a solid white. it's tinted either red or blue, depending on the tempature i have the monitor set at.
(and yes, i have played with color correction in nividias control panel. the best i can get is a very, very very pale blue since i don't get pure white no matter what i do.)

The smaller one, which maxes at 1152x864 is fine, crisp and clear tho, but gaming at that res makes my graphic card weep from loneliness.

Also, occasionally the corner of my smaller one has a red tinge. not sure what caused it, but seeing it really made me amp up my search past the "idly flicking through ads" stage.

Of course a monitor-- especially a cheap one-- can fail or degrade at any time. Thats why I'd recommend you replacing these with a high-quality trinitron-type monitor. By the time _those_ fail, we'll all hopefully be buying SED displays dirt cheap.

Have you tried degaussing? Do you have speakers or any other magnetic source near it?

You probably don't want B grade monitors, unless you enjoy staring at scratches in the center of your screen.

futureconnection is in New Jersey, I bought my FW900 there. If you can do pick-up you can probably negotiate the price down a little bit.

I just got off craigslist, and i'm in the process of buying a NEC MultiSync P1150 for 20 bucks. (21 inch AG)

another monitor, also craiglist, is a Quantex AT1097F (19 inch shadow mask)
i figure these two will tide me over for awhile until i can get some better stuff (or till SED and such comes out)

70 bucks for two 1600 x 1200 monitors isn't bad, and i have the deskspace for it. I'm buying the NEC now, since it's a pretty good god damned deal, but the quantex is till in the air.

any feedback on my ideas of (cheap crt now for expensive lcd later)

And i did try degaussing, nada. it goes away if i turn my monitor off and on again tho.

Hey guys i just posted that W900 vs FW900 thread, and i'm likely to get a new crt at FutureConnection since it's close to me here in northern NJ. I'm in the same boat as you, i want a big cheap high quality CRT monitor :p, even though i'm satisfied with my current one, those awesome prices are killing me :(

Kreiger, there's a good chance a degaussing wand will permanently clear up image defects, google for it and you ought to find them real cheap (less than $20). Handy to keep around for any crt screen probably.

From what i've read in the past some high end 21" crt's are:

The Mitsubishi 2070, 2060, and likely the 2040 variants, the NEC FE2111, the P1130 variants are also high-end but supposedly not creme-of-the-crop. And the FW900 is definitely high end, but i'm personally curious about the 24" W900 model that goes for $250.

Do any of you guys live within driving distance of FutureConnection in Garfield, NJ ?(close to rt 80 + 46 exits).

I do, i'm in bergen county (montvale). I'm actually heading down to teaneck now to pick up the monitor. heh. my aim is beneaththenoise fyi.

After i snag my monitor, maybe you can come by and laugh at it when you have your new high end whatever yer getting.

lol.

Nice you lucky SOB, gotta love new toys even if they are new/refurb.

One of my cousins lives in your town, or is it montville, new jersey has so many towns with similar sounding names; woodridge, woodbridge, ridgewood blah

I bought my parents old home right in Garfield/border Lodi, can't complain as i got my home for a song ;), but as in the geek hardware world, i can't wait to sell and upgrade towns ;).

Definitely look up that degaussing wand or coil that i mentioned above, there's a good chance it'll clear up any issues you're having.
