Help choosing a video card

Hey guys, I've been saving up for a top-of-the-line computer for a while now, and I'm just about to buy it. The last thing I gotta decide is the video cards. I want to go SLI, I just dont know what GPU to use... The games I will be playing are:

World of Warcraft
Counterstrike: Source
Far Cry
Need for Speed Underground 2
Half Life 2
Mabey Doom 3

Really I dont have a budget, I would like it to be cheaper than $700 per card though. The cards I was deciding on were:

BFG FX6800 Ultra PCI-E (nVidia)
HIS Excalibur X800XT PCI-E (ATI)

Also the processor will be the FX-55 and the mobo will be Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, if those matter.

Please help.

I'm not sure, I've only ever boughten off-the-shelf computers, is it Nvidia?

Thanks for replying btw

yet - ati's SLI thing isn't too far away, and with the new cores in their cards it'd be cheaper and cooler - look at the X800XL

EDIT: also, man, why SLI? All it does is offer better framerates, but when the highest the eye can see is 30fps anyway, why go to 120fps? What you wanna look for is image quality, SLI is overkill, and, imho, a fad designed to sell more GPUs for minimal gains. As long as it has sixteen pixel pipelines and loads of vertex shaders etc, it doesn't matter what you get, just get a good deal - i really recommend the X800XL, it plays all recent games at a solid fps of above 60 at 1280x1024 with 4AA and AF, which is more than you could ask for, and it costs half of the 6800U / X850XTPEs

i would disagree w/ your entire statement.

1. ati's SLI is far away and they are new at it (you can argue all you want about them using it back in the old days) but they are still new at it , while nvidia is the leader.

2. Nvidia has SLI NOW... so if you are not on a budget get 2 , 6800 ultras and go to town.

3. only 30fps. Ha... Ha ha ha.
i can tell the difference and i can feel the difference b/t 30 and 60.

why would you want 120? b/c you might want the power for future games.

4. you say Ati's next generation is going to be good... well.. same can be said for nvidias and on top of that hes building it today not 4 or 6 months from now.

so yes... go w/ dual 6800 ultras.

i wish i could go sli but my 6800 Overclocked is good enough for now. As i am on a budget.

Actually, its a scientific fact that the human eye can only notice 72 frames per second.

did anyone state anything higher then 60 NO and i sure as hell cant stand with anything less the 40 and i prefer 60
also eyes use more of a motion blur....next time your in a car and straigh and pay attention out the corner of your eye and notice the bluring instead of frames :p

Uh, yeah, but so's nVidia... just 'cos they got there first doesn't mean it's worth it/better

basically, SLI is pointless unless you have 1600xwhatever capable monitor, or you're stupid - and as you said, he's building his machine now, not in 6-8 months' time, so a machine for future gaming is redundant anyway, as any games which push 6800Us in SLI are a good few years away anyway - basically, if you get SLI 6800s mate, get a big ol' monitor too or you're wasting money on frames which you can't notice

If I remember right, when 3dfx collapsed nVidia bought the company. They hired many of their top engineers and aquired all of 3dfx's tech and design docs for future cards. If i'm accurate on this, I would say this would give nVidia a definite leg up on ATi as far as experience with SLI goes.

As for upgrading to SLI, I say go for it. It should last you a few years - at least until games start using the next Unreal engine. In which case all current (and probably next generation) video cards will be unable to run it at decent speeds (40-60 fps) with all the bells and whitsles on.

SLI sucks dont waste your money. Get a good ATI card. Picture quality is far superior with ATI. Scrap the ASUS board and get the DFI or MSI.

As that article states:

Seeing framewise is simply not the way how the eye\brain system works. It works with a continuous flow of light\information.

So you can't say "its a scientific fact that the human eye can only notice 72 frames per second."

In fact we can notice change in any framerate, take a video or something being rendered in 3D at 5,000 FPS, then instantly drop it down to 100FPS, we will most definitely notice the change in FPS.

it's true; when it comes down to it, a nVidia card might be able to offer 5fps more, but ATi's software on the card is far better at actually making it look nice
