Bought a 6970 off newegg the powercolor pcs+
rated at 940 for the core

First time using a stress program to test the gpu so wanted to make sure I am doing it right.

I have msi kombostor, latest GPUz, CCC overdrive.

- booted up gpuz and checked to make sure of the stats then looked at the sensors part
- booted up CCC
- booted up kombuster - left it at 1024x640 and checked the post-fx and the 8xmsaa

this seems to get my core up to 90-96%

@940,930,920,900,890 I get a vpu recovery error (I see no artifacts just the vpu error) - sometimes it skips the vpu recovery error and gives me a bsod (seems to be when I try to click exit out of kombustor).
downclocking the memory appeared to have no effect (still got the vpu recovery errors).

was in the process of testing the 880 but wanted to make sure I am testing this right.

earlier I tested crysis 2 (had a lockup at 940); was able to play black ops ok - but I think I only got 41% gpu stressed in that game.

am I testing this right? and ya atm Im not too happy since Im not sure where a non-crash downclock will be at. 880 was ok for a few mins but want to give it at least 5-10 a couple times just to see.

'regretfully' I live in the UK and RMAing this back to newegg will cost a mint. So want to make sure this card is really a pos before I do decide to send back.

thanks

Sounds like it may be a faulty card. What are the rest of your system specs?

I wouldn't try RMAing it back to Newegg, shipping costs are going to get extreme. Maybe try contact PowerColor and see if they can issue an RMA. I think they have some centers in Europe if I'm not mistaken.

If your system was running fine before installing the card....

What system is it currently running on? Cpu, psu, etc. What video card were you running beforehand?

Did you wipe the old display drivers before installing the card? Have you tried a different driver?

I agree about the shipping costs - well I am not so sure about them having places in europe; I saw someone else post that they had to send their stuff to california. I wouldnt mind getting it replaced here but dont want to dink around (I have 11 days to get it to newegg for the refund else not sure what).

specs:
q6600 (had it slightly oced to 2.8 but then took it back to 2.4 when I was getting vpu errors)
8 gigs ram
winxp
was using a 5770 previous and had no issues (with crashes etc) ...
550 antec neo HE psu
using 11.7 drivers - havnt tried different drivers ... guess I could try different drivers but why could I play black ops fine but crysis crashed me and then kombustor ...

Kombuster and Crysis are much more intense than any CoD game.

What about your PSU? Is it strong enough to run that card's power demand at max load?

yeah isn't a BSOD sort of odd for a faulty video card overclock?

hmmm ya I was told the psu is pretty good and wouldnt need another one ... I tried reinstalling the drivers and clean sweeping them etc ... didnt make a difference.

Put my old card back in and I was able to test it via kombuster fine -
I ended up sending the card back - has a ways to go to get to newegg to make the return date ...

If I just had the bsod then ya I would think its more the psu etc - but it would just vpu recover at almost any setting on the gpu (830-940) are the ones that I tried.
My 5770 would gpu recover also if I pushed it too far with kombuster.

would suck if it was just the psu - guess Ill see if I get another card and then push it and it does the same thing.
