help - can't get SATA HD to work

ok well I just got my brand new maxtor 200 gig SATA HD

i have an asus a7n8x deluxe mobo btw - which i think I need some help on getting it to work

I plugged in the data cable from the drive and mobo - I also have a connector from molex to the drive

but it also has a molex on the drive itself, so one question i have is do i just use one source of power to it, or both?

anyway the problem is my computer wont see it - this is my first time working with serial so i'm sure i'm doing something wrong

one power connector, if you plug both you can fry the drive


also what do you mean the comp can't see it, at which point? does the sata controller see it and not windows?
 
actually you know what - I just thought of something

I'm going to reformat this computer anyway

now when I re-install my OS (which will be XP) will it be able to configure my serial for me during the instillation?

and I also have an IDE harddrive in my computer - should I put that to slave/ master? (I plan on using the Serial harddrive for my OS)
 
sata drives are seperate from pata, no need to change the jumper settings at all. The big hting would be changing the boot order in the bios.
 
Your IDE drive is still master on that channel

You shouldn't change the jumper settings on your SATA drive. They come set from the factory correctly and do not have the same purpose as on a PATA drive.

As for you computer not "seeing" the drive. Where doesn't it see it, the bios or Windows?

If it can see it in the bios but not windows, that probably means you have not formated the drive yet. Format it and you should be good to go.

If it can't be seen in the bios, I would look for a setting to enable the SATA interface. OR, make sure you have the drive plugged into the correct SATA connector for running 1 drive.

You mentioned installing XP to the SATA drive. You will need to configure the SATA as your second boot device (cd-rom is first) and (correct me if I am wrong) you will need a current copy of the SATA drivers for the Windows install. Watch what the installer is doing. When it says to press F6 (I think) to install third party SCSI or RAID drivers, press it and pop your floppy into the drive.
