Any of you guys have this monitor? I bought this used and it's not calibrated right.. it's too bright and the fonts are not clear.. i think the model is E500 multiscan.. something like that.. :( any help would greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Is it still too bright and washed out even when you turn the brightness & contrast down to 25% or 30% ? Also try setting the color temperature to around 6500k

If the answer is yes then i'd probably recommend trying to get your money back. Many trinitron CRT monitors from the year 2000 and up develop what's called a "brightness problem" that can be a hassle to fix, requiring a special cable + software + tinkering. Not necessarily hard but why bother if you can just get your money back?

To lightly calibrate your monitor you can download Nokia monitor test and tinker with the monitor settings. Remember to set the color temp to something close to 6500k (try a few different temps). It won't really be calibrated but you'll soon figure out if your monitor has a problem with brightness. Edit: Might also be a good idea to reset all monitor settings to "default" before starting out.

Good luck either way

yes, still bright even i set the brightness to 0% and contrast to 50%. The guy said he's willing to give my money back.. so i guess i'll send this back to him.

If the monitor has a "Image Restoration" option (found on most Sony's) it *might* fix the brightness issue for awhile, Worth a try at least. Image restore is usually found in the Color menu. just be sure you have the Brightness setting higher than 0 when you run image restore , set it to around 40 then turn it down after you run it.

i dont think this one has the image restoration option :( I'll try to calibrate this more and see what i can come up with.

you really cant calibrate a screen by your eyes, you need a calibrating tool like a one eye or spyder:)

good luck.....

Glad to see he's willing to do the right thing. Sorta shitty he'd sell a monitor that so obviously has a problem, but then that shouldn't surprise anyone i guess. It won't hurt tinkering with it some more but don't wait on the return too long lest the seller change his mind.

If you are still interested in getting a CRT then i'd suggest looking to buy one locally or grab one of the rare new ones still available on ebay. PM me if you want more info on this.

In this case for the purpose of troubleshooting it will work well enough ;) (as the OP soon figured out)

ya.. kina messed up that he sold a defective monitor.. my wife got mad at me because i keep buying used stuff online.. I think i'm just going to send this back if i can't find a free software to calibrate this monitor.

That's what i would do, send it back that is. If you have set that monitor's brightness to zero, and the image is still too bright and washed out, that monitor's a goner in my book. Either it was used too much, or just prone to a common defect. Calibration tools won't truly fix a brightness issue, a sony windas tool + related software + patience probably would though (around $35 dollars). Once again, it'll take work and patience on your part, and possibly throwing good money after bad...

Don't have much advice on how to handle the wifie, except to remind her that most purchases involving used products turn out ok :), unfortunately this time you weren't very lucky.

Hope it works out for ya either way.

and also, what i've noticed there's a burned in picture on the screen.. looks like this monitor was on for a very long period of time and left a burned in mark on the screen.. Pretty messed up.... oh well, back to the seller and he was kind enough to give my money back.. I'm just gonna go buy the 17" inchess CRT monitor on craigslist for $10 and it's local buy :D
