HELP Burning Smell

okay guys, so my q9550 and dark knight came in today and i took out the old processor which was a e2180 and put in the quad after i installed the back plate. put a little artic silver 5 on the heat pipes and put the cooler on. Installed two fans and reconnected everything.

Went to power up and got 8.8. code. Powered on but nothing else. Then i smelled a burnign sent so i immediately switched everything off. Took the cooler off and took the cpu out and nothing looked burnt or smelled anymore. Resinstalled everything and went to power on and post code 8.8. again. No smell just the post code. Power comes on and powers hard drives and fans but not video or anything.

so i went to install the old processor to make sure it was a problem with the new processor and again nothing just 8.8. and no video. I have also tried numerous cmos resets.

I have been working on it for like two hours so I havent had that much time to play around with everything but right now i am in panic mode and need help. The mother board is a dri X-38 T2R..

If theres anything i forgot just let me know. thanks
 
88 is "reserved" on the error list so no help there. Do you have both the 24 and 8 pin power supplies plugged into your board? Does your video board require a PCIe power and is it plugged in as well? How about your memory? Have you tried removing one of the DIMMs/switching it for the other. Can you use memory you know to be good to rule it out?
 
The burning smell concerns me....maybe you shorted out the board installing the cooler backplate...
 
took everything out put the q9550 back in with the stock cooler. now when i go to boot i get one long continous beep. I only have hard drive in one stick of memory and graphics card
 
Its possible the burning smell was the onboard voltage regulators for the CPU frying.
This explains why the other CPU no longer works.

The voltage regulators are under the big heatsink at the rear of the board.
Check to see if the smell comes from there.

That would be my guess. Also it does sound like something my have been shorted out as stated above.
 
If you got some spare parts laying around just do a swap and test, to figure what component is wrong.

You can always go to a retail store and buy something.....and return later. :D

that connection looks fried.
Is it possible that the cpu did this.

I know i need another mother board but should i rma this cpu too?

Or is there another solution. I have loved my dfi board so far, and dont really want to buy another board.

ANyways if I do need another board can someone recommend one. Fairly cheap. Wanna overclock the q9550 to atleast 3.4ghz. Dont have much money because i was saving it all for the cpu and dark knight

yep, been there before, thats a trace in the motherboard raised up because it got overloaded for one reason or another, likely a direct short elsewhere and that was just the thinnest trace in the circuit so it burnt there first
 
That may be repairable.
If the fault was just a trace that was too thin (causing it to overheat), then all the components should be fine.
Clean up the surface of the 2 trace edges and solder a wire across them.

If one of the components was applying too high a voltage, causing the track to overheat, then it is already dead.

Of course if it is under warranty, RMA it, dont do any of the above!
 
what is the warranty for these boards..got it 13 months ago. can't remember what it is. I put a little ball of solder to try and patch it already but i can try and remove tht little ball, or try a bigger ball..lol again can anyone recommend a new board in the time being if its not under warranty?

Look up the warranty policy on DFI's site. You can't expect others to do all the research for you.
 
tried cleaning all the dust out...hahash dust out would work nice

try google, type "power supply post code 8.8" or similar.

the trick part is try flash bios with new cpu installed, after done flash bios then go into bios menu and select load optimized default then save to exit.

Well went out today and bought a p5q deluxe. Put everything together with the q9550 and and went to start up.It started up fine. Started installing vista and midway throguh the installation it turned off did a couple of intel restarts (power on then off quickly) the then turned on and didnt post. Just comes up all the fans come on and everything but not booting.

Tried to put the old cpu back in and to the same result. Changed memory to no avail. No beep codes..WTF?

Im stessed.

anyone no anything about this?
 
Im using Hx620.. I have tested the voltages coming out and everything seems fine. Is it possible that the Q9550 is bad and taking the mobos with it?
 
I know if the motherboard is dead its dead..but For the hell of it I just tried my old Hiper ps with the Q9550 one stick of ram and my 8400gs and got the same thing. Should I just rma the New ASUS board, the Q9550 and the other DFI motherboard and just get new stuff? I like the ASUS board from the little time I had to play with it.

Is it possible that the new ASUS board just went DOA right in the middle of the vista install? I didnt smell any burning with the ASUS board or anything and i didnt notice anything wrong with the board itself.

Could be bad PSU ? try borrow or replacement PSU to see if problem go away, sometimes voltage reading might be wrong and won't hurt try test with other PSU.

well since I have been through two mobos I am going to rma the asus the chip and the power supply. I somehting is still wrong then i dont know what im gonna do lol
 
Is it possible that i really messed up and just installed the dark knight wrong both times? Maybe something with the backplate? I read the instructiions, used common sense and even watched a youtube video but maybe I am shorting out the motherboards or something. From bottom to top it goes Metal bracket-->sticky layer-->back or mobo-->cpu-->heatsink right?

Yeah, you did it right. It's pretty hard to screw up the installation of a backplate.
 
Thats what i thought but you never know. lol I requested rma's for the board, ps, and processor (which are the only things that could be causing this right?). Should be shipping most of that stuff out fri. I'll get back to you guys next week and let you know whats happening with it then. Thanks for all of your help.
 
RMA everything and be done with it. Get a new CPU, mobo, RAM...everything you can RMA, do it.

Why bother dicking around at this point.

Yes. RMA it all. There is a phrase I learned long ago "just because it looks like it is working doesn't mean it isn't broken".

^ With as many variable's in the errors your are having, you would e best of starting as clean as possible.
 
Might want to try running it outside the case (on the box the mobo came in), not sure if its shorting or not, but i've seen a few mobos short out because of some contact with the case.

Obviously that suggestion is really stretching it, but i'm assuming by the length of this thread that you've pretty much exausted all other options.

A MIR should not prevent you from RMAing something. Sending in the UPS does not void the warranty. They still need to honour it if you can provide proof of purchase.
 
I see some traces of AS5 in that pic you posted on the cpu clip and other places :( Are you sure you didnt get any where it doesnt belong?

Be very careful with that AS5 stuff, you could be shorting something out with it. Its conductive. Use sparingly, because if you don't it will spread when it gets hot and still short, just an idea of what could of happend with second board as well.

AS5 >> Less applied correctly = more

I highly doubt if that Hx620 PSU or Q9550 is the culprit.

Just a opinion, I'd be weary as to how that dark knight cooler comes in contact with the CPU, seems like there would be weak heat contact points due to heat pipes having direct contact with CPU.

AS5 does conduct at frequency, one of the properties of capacitors.
 
I CAN confirm that 8.8 on a DFI board does mean Toast CPU. Same thing happened to me with my first E7200.
 
AS5 will cause shorts. This is proven fact. Do not allow any to get anywhere it's not intended to go, period. I've seen too many dead video cards (none of which were mine, I don't modify my GPU's cooling) where a tiny bit of AS5 getting where it shouldn't be was the cause of the card's death.
 
I didn't know if that cpu was toast because it worked for like 20 min with the asus board, although I guess it still could be messed up. I was so frustrated with everything that I wasn't being as careful as I usually am when I put the new board in and after all of the troubles I noticed that two of the pins were bent on the Asus mobo. I sent the asus board, the psu, and the cpu back today. Asus will charge 40 bucks for the bent pins but I just want my pc back.

Whats a little weird was after I noticed the bent pins, they looked like they were still making proper contact with the cpu co I put it back in and the system still worked for that 20 min then died,

all in all
345 for cpu and heatsink
220 for p5q delux
45 to ship everything
free (bitching) - 40 for socket repair
= very expensive cpu upgrade!!

Hope everyone else has better luck with their upgrades.
