Help building Xeon or Opt rig

I am thinking of building a dual xeon or opteron board and was wondering if it could be done for $2000 or under. However, I am not familiar with server rigs and I know there are certain issues to be aware of like ram, and the xeons needing different power supplies, connectors, and fans because the retail fans aren't so great.

If anyone could help out with some input or even just a link, it would be much appreciated. thanks
 
might be more suited for the SMP forum but what are your uses so we can help determine intel/amd? atleast the opterons can be done for under 2k, most likely the xeons (i'm not as familiar with them).

Well, the usage would be geared towards 3d. It's also hard to decide which cpu to go with. I have read by posters that many programs are compiled specifically to Intel standards and thus Xeons are optimized for them giving Opterons a disadvantage. Not sure if this is at all true. I am simply looking for the best price/performance ratio rig setup. I guess I just need some guidance on if it's possible, how to go about it all (such as things to watch out for, as i've read the PC-DL Asus manual is pretty crappy about certain issues).

I've thought about building a dual xeon machine myself for the last few months. Something i would strongly suggest though is waiting for the new Nocono Xeon cores from Intel which will be out in the next few months. They will sport EM64T which is Intel's debut of 64-bit processing. Nocono will be the first to have 64-bit followed by the desktop Prescott processors late 3rd quarter this year.

Since the current Xeons and Opterons have both been out for quite a while i'd wait and grab something new that comes out.
