Recently the hdd LED in the front of the computer started blinking. Around this same time, my computer has been randomly freezing on me (requiring a reboot and whatnot). Does this mean that my hard drive is failing on me or something? Please help! I'm kinda scared and tomorrow im going to backup all of my stuff on dvds.....
Thanks

Provided the HDD LED is connected properly to the motherboard, it simply blinks whenever the hard drive is being accessed.
Can you describe the symptoms of when it hangs a little better?
Also, have you run the manufacturer's hdd diagnostic software? If you got the drive retail, it would've had the cd with it, if you got it oem, you can go to the manufacturer's website and download the software.

Well....the light does not stop blinking ever when i turn the computer on, straight from when it boots up. I read a forum awhile back about something similar and some guy said that his hdd led blinked for a little bit and then his hdd just crapped out. I havent messed with the way that the led is plugged into the mobo for a few months now.....and it had been fine prior to a few days ago. When it hangs, it just....freezes and i think the light still blinks, ill have to check it out more if/when it happens again :( . As far as software.....ill go check that out, definitely dont have a cd.

Alright.....it just crashed again. The led keeps blinking and everything just stops. I was playing warcaft 3 and it the cursor just stops moving, music stops and i have to reboot... Please help...

Have you checked to see if your system is overheating? There may be the remote possibility the MB uses the LED as a warning indicator.

Would be more helpful if you posted the make and model MB so someone can lookup the manual and come up with an appropriate answer instead of "guessing" ;)

Specs are in the sig ;) As far as overheating, the system is idling 102 F. It doesnt really get above 115 F. It has been much hotter in the past and no blinkage... Good idea though.

I just got a new vid card and was messing with OC'ing it, so at first i thought that that could be have been causing it(same symptoms with too high of an OC). However, i just put it back at stock to test and it still is locking up.

Not everyone views signatures. IOW, I have them turned off. ;)

Update - So it seems that botht he hdd light and the power leds were flashing. I unplugged the hdd light and now the power light is no longer blinking either. I dont know if somehow the 2 led's are connected or something but....that doesnt make sense to me. Upon further "testing", it seems that the system only locks up during warcraft 3, and holds up just fine during bf2. Furthermore, everytime i reboot, i get that screen that wants me to check my drives for consistency and whatnot. Is that just because i keep hard restarting it though? I dont even know anymore... All i know is that it is incredibly frustrating.

How about putting in the old video card to see if it still does the same thing?

I dont really think its the vid card cause the problem seems to have coincided with the blinking led....but ill regrettably give that a try. I just think that between the led and the prompt to check the drives for consistency that it would have to be the hdd.

DLed the softward and did the quick test. havent done the full test yet...meant to leave that on last night but it froze so i just turned it off

Am i right in assuming that a hard drive crapping out on me would cause random freezes?

If all this crap is happening, do you think theres any way i could still use this drive as a slave? New hd should be here tomorrow...
