HELP Athlon 64 broken?

Well, topic has ? but i pinned down that i somehow busted my processor. Here's the story:
I got a Venus 12 today and went to put it on. Upon taking out the old heatsink the processor was stuck to the bottom, so i pulled/twisted it off. There was a ton of thermal paste on it at that point, like, it was oozing even. So i wiped it off, but not very carefully, i got some on the pcb that sticks out on teh sides (i think this is what broke it). so then i apply some AS5 to the cpu, and then turn on the pc and wala, nothing but fans. So after eliminating everything else (mobo ended up in cardboard box), i realized that the motherboard came with a little led indicator tellin me whats wrong. said bad proc.

Now, the question. Might I have put too much AS5 on it? When i get my replacement should i put only enough to barely cover the cpu, as in still be able to see it a little through the paste? Please lemme know, is main pc and i need it up and running asap.
 
Make sure you seated everything right. I don't think the thermal paste would kill it, but it's late, and I'm not thinking clearly.
 
scratch that, processor is out with tons of bent pins. gonna try and re-align them with some tweezers
 
alright, pins bent back so processor fits in the slot. time to see if she works...now vid card fan don't spin...shit.
 
not being able to get it out prooves that it was bent pins.. when it was stuck and you pulled it out you bent the pins.. i hear of the socket 478 doing it also.. thats why intel invented lga socket
what would happen is when you remove the hsf it doesnt come straight off so it bends a few pins on the cpu unless you unlatched it first because you know whats coming off with the heat sink
 
think my vid card is ok? i dont got another pc with right AGP slot to test her on.
 
it should be alright... im not trying to make you feel stupid.. but did you remember to plug the power back into the video card? i forget that a lot and my geforce dont care.. since i got no fan i got no audio alert so i gotta wait untill nvidia sentinel tells me to realise this

i like how the geforce 6 series solves this problem
its got a pc speaker-like speaker that makes a high pitched screach when you dont plug it in... its like HEY YOU IDIOT PLUG ME IN!

the radeon approach is acceptable too... you boot with no power.. it basically says plug me in you idiot

my geforce says hey! i have no external power... lets slow down to 375 mhtz so i can run at this speed
 
hehe of course the power is plugged in, no beep though. didn't beep earlier, but before the fan spinned.
 
I have the same Venus 12 Thermaltake fan, and interestingly enough did the same thing when trying to remove the original stock AMD 64 fan. The thermal compound they use practically glues the chip to the bottom of the heatsink and it pulled my chip straight out of the socket with the heatsink. Fortunately there was no pin damage.

I'm curious though, did you remember to lift the latch when you put the processor back in? There is a retention latch on the side of the socket that locks the CPU in place. If the latch is up, the processor pratically falls into place when the pins are aligned. If the latch is down, I'd wager you'd have to apply some force to seat it. Trying to put the CPU back into the socket with the latch down may have contributed to your bent pins.
 
hehe i didn't see such a latch, but let me check real fast...yeah, theres a latch i spy now. odd though. hopefully my 939 pin stuff won't give me this much trouble (ordered $515 worth of mobo/cpu 5mins ago) now to see if my vid card is toast...
 
well holy shit...i think it actually might work now that i re-seated the once pin bent cpu. Gonna hook everything back up and let you guys know whats what.
 
Strangely enough - those sockets are called ZIF for a reason - Zero Insertion Force. The CPU should just drop into it and pull out just as easily. If it is not- you are doing something wrong.

Regarding the HSF seeming glued to the processor - heat it up before you pull it off. Use a hair dryer, a heat gun, or just power up the computer (if your machine is working) and sit in the bios until your machine reaches its max temp. After that - quickly power down the machine and pull the processor off.

I have removed my 478 HSFs multiple times and had the processors come out with them. As long as you don't twist the HSF you should not bend any pins if it pulls the processor out of the socket without pulling up on the locking arm.

Also - when you go to bend the pins back make sure you heat them up too. If you bend those things too many times at room temperature they will pop right off. Easy way to bend those pins back is with a mechanical pencil.
 
well, seems like it all is working but my video card gives me the no power connected error even though i've got power to it. any thoughts?

That is great -- that you got it working. Any way to test the card on a different machine?
 
nah, gotta be the card though unless a bad psu, but i doubt that. think i could rma it even though i flashed it, if they can't go in to check cuz it don't work i don't see any problem

before you RMA the card, check:

  • the card is connected to the monitor - is it a video card message or a monitor message?
  • the card is connected to the motherboard - remove the card and reseat it
  • a molex connector is connected to the card - remove then reinsert, also try another connector

Just make sure you did that step. I had a molex that came with my 9800XT, and it ended up being lose, I took it out and plugged it into the one directly from PS and booted right up.
 
ok, now i put in a geforce mx4000 and windows won't load and don't recognize my sata drive. any help? also, the hardware is recognized in bios, but windows don't see it.
