Just built a Computer
Asus A8n-E Nforce 4 Ultra
1gig Corsair PC3200 2x 512mb 2-2-2
3500 Winchester
Raptor 740GD
Antec 430watt PSU Trupower 2 ATX 2.0
ATI X850xt PE PCIe

The computer boots. the screen is blank no post. no bios.. nothing
The computer sounds normal, like normal boot. Is this occuring maybe because the Bios doesnt support the winchester cpu? So I need a newcastle to update the bios? :confused:
 
Use only 1 stick of RAM, it should post.

Flash the bios to the most recent version, reinstall the 2nd DIMM. It should work.

How many amps does that PSU have on the 12V rail? It may not be enough?

Is it a 20 or 24 pin PSU? It may make a difference.

Try the RAM thing and check back in.
 
there's a good chance that you need a bios update for the winchester. although, I would have thought by now that all boards shipping would have that taken care of... :confused:

tried with just a pci vid card and 1 stick of ram?

no beep codes? strange...
try clearing cmos yet?

The Screen is blank cant get into bios or anything...

and the PSU is 24pin

It sounds like a perfect boot no problems. no mysterious beeps.. cleared the cmos.. Im just guessing I need to flash the bios... I guess Ill get a spare clawhammer... :(
 
pop out the bios battery. Let it sit for a minute and put it back in.

remove all peripheral cards except the video card.

remove all drives except the boot hard drive and a CD rom

You do have the 6 pin power cable plugged into the video card?

And the 4 pin plugged into the mobo.

Just trying to eliminate the simple stuff. When in a rush or panic, sometimes I forget the simple stuff too.

It is possible you could have a bad bios chip.

Are all the components new, or were any of them pulled from a previous machine?
 
i recommend booting up with the bare minimum parts which are the power supply, motherboard, cpu, ram, and videocard. see if this helps, good luck

I am using the same board with the latest BIOS 1003. I was having a similar issue in that upon booting the computer would not POST and I could not get into the BIOS. I, however, was getting a repeating beep that would last 3 sec or so. In my situation it turned out to be the memory. I tried using 2 sets of Crucial Ballistix at first which didn't work and then went back to a pair of Mushkin Level 1 dimms I had. I was using 2 512MB dimms @ 2-3-2-10 1T timings.

Since then, I have installed 2 512MB Corsair TwinXMS3200XL dimms and I have been running at 2-2-2-10 1T for a few months now with essentially no problems. I run the dimms at 2.85V. On the other hand, I have recently been having problems playing HL2 where the game keeps crashing giving me that "memory @ so so cannot be read" error. I have tried bringing the memory to 2T setting and that seemed to alleviate the problem.

In any case, definitely try using just 1 dimm and set the memory timings to the most stable possible (ie. not aggresive timings). Also, bring the DIMM voltage up to 2.8V and really check those memory timings.

All that of course is possible if you CAN actually get into the BIOS eventually. Keep trying. ASUS has also recently updated the BIOS again for the board to an official 1004 BIOS which appears to be mainly a CPU code update. I would presume that it is meant to allow compatibility with San Diego and Venice. But, it may provide better compatibility with the winchester chips.

Fixed it, I thought it was the bios so i swapped my clawhammer to try the switch no go.. after like an hour of tinkering with it When I was about to give up and RMA the Board. I thought hey... Why the hell isnt this working, what did i change.. The Monitor. I changed the Monitor!.. I guess a KDS LCD doesnt like to work.. it was the monitor. All that tearing apart two pcs for no reason.. :( Thanx for everyons input though well appreciated... Now the PC is done..

Oh and I wasted so Much AS5.... last night.. taking one cpu out after another.. makes me sad.. good thing I have like 25 grams left.. :D
 
that sux man...all that for an lcd... damn... I know what you mean though...similar thing happened to me a while back with an NEC monitor. Power light would come on and turn green, but nothing ever came on the screen and the pc offered no beep codes. Turns out the transformer wasn't charging the tube...so all I got was nothing even though it looked as if the monitor was working fine.

hey....at least it wasn't the computer though! :p

Same here the LCD was green like it was getting feedback it wasnt an idle yellow but a green saying it was getting a signal.. LOL SO Much AS5 wasted :( :(

use smaller blobs! i've gone through at least 50 heatsink installations with one of those 3.5g tubes of as5.. i'm probably like 3/4th of the way through the tube :D
