So, the day after I bought my new machine, my trusty current setup of 2+ years is now dead. I keep on getting a blue screen a few minuetes after bootup (no matter the WinXP partition, the Win2k partition, or the WinXP CD), which says that "the BIOS in this system is not fully ACPI compliant". It tells me to go to www.hardware-update.com (which looks kinda shady) to get a new bios. I haven't toyed with this machine in about a year, and it's been running faithfully. Installed Matlab two days ago, and the latest WinXP update a week ago, nothing else for a while. I've already tried updating the latest BIOS, with no impact whatsoever.

Any ideas if this mobo is completely dead, or if there's something y'all seen to fix this. I was about to sell this to my roommate very cheaply this weekend, who was planning on upgrading from his PII xxxMHz (us poor poor grad students) so he could shave 20 minutes off his Matlab simulation. :D

Specs (some so old, I can't remember what they are anymore):

Gigabyte GA-7VRXP Rev2
Athlon 1800+
512MB Corsiar DDR 2700
40GB Seagate Cuda, 75GB Deathstar
DVD-RW, DVD-Rom, Plextor CD-RW
Some winfast nvidia geforce card
Creative gamer 5.1
some ATI tv card
some ethernet card, either netgear or linksys

Thanx very much!

Taking the bad mechanic's approach, I'd try replacing components one by one if you can get your hands on them and see when your system unbreaks. ;) ram/videocard/[H]drive. If you get this far then, it's your mobo or mayeybe your HD. We dont get em where I live but isn't it thunderstorm season? Zap zap zap zap ZAP

:D
