Help an old guy out: which console?

Edit:
Thanks all, I've made up my mind. I'm going with the XBox, mainly because of the controller--the PS3 controller felt very uncomfortable to me. But I made the mistake of showing my wife "Little Big Planet", so I may have to get a PS3 too. How horrible for me. :D

I haven't owned a console since the atari 2600 days, but my wife came home with a Wii recently. We have fun playing some of the Wii games, but I like FPS games (the more mindless and gory the better) and so was thinking about a PS3 or XBox360. I would like a console with good FPS games, good racing games, and some games the wife and I could play together (she likes things like Zelda and puzzle games). Is one console better than the other or is it a wash?

Also, the Xbox seems to be about $100 cheaper, but doesn't come with wireless. Is online play/downloads a must-have for these? I can't run a cable to the living room so would have to buy the wireless setup for the xbox360, negating the price difference.

Blu-ray isn't really that interesting to me; I'm still pretty satisfied with standard DVD and my projector isn't full HD anyway. But I've never seen Blu-ray, so maybe its the shit and I just don't know it.

I'd appreciate your opinions, and please let me know if there are other factors I haven't thought about. Thanks.

I wish you luck... but sadly you're going to get a bunch of opinions that don't actually reflect your needs, more the preferences (and allegiances in some cases) of the people posting.

To answer your questions... both have good FPS / racing games, and for the sort of games your wife might play, you'll likely be looking at XBLA / PSN (downloadable games). XBLA (especially with community games) edges it here as there's a much greater number of titles available. With regard to retail titles, both consoles are quite similar in terms of multiplatform games these days and both have a good selection of exclusives.

As for network connections... yes, they're pretty much a must have if you want to make the most of your machine. If you're tech savvy, then a wireless bridge is a cheaper option for the 360... if not, you're stuck with the official adapter / homeplug. PS3 obviously has the wireless built in... so works out better. Though maybe you could take the opportunity to drill a hole or two as wired connections are much better anyway. ;)

Beyond that, there's really not much you need to know... especially as you're not much interested in the media functionality. Wait a day or two though, as there's a fair chance a PS3 price cut will be announced at their E3 conference presentation.

There is going to be an PS3 price cut? if that happens when would it go into effect?

Research the games. Some of the best casual fun with the wife type titles are the downloadable games on both consoles. In general my wife has really enjoyed -

Castle Crashers
Lego Star wars, lego indy, lego batman
fable 2
Little Big planet
Lumines Live
Flower
Pixeljunk games
Hexic HD
Rock Band 2 (we both thought rythm games were the lamest thing going until we started playing it together)

The biggest killer app for my wife though has been netflix on the 360, which she really likes

Both consoles have FPS games, although I'd say the 360 has a slight edge with some games like Graw, l4d, gears of war and some others that are not on the ps3, and the halos if you're into those. PS3 has some good ones as well like Uncharted and Killzone 2.

Racing games are another wash...you've got PGR and Forza on the 360 and motorstorms and eventually GT5 on the ps3.

PSN is free, but lacks some features, xbl is great but costs 3-4 bucks per month depending on when you buy an xbl card, so you have that choice too.

Research the games you think you'd like to play, and then buy the console that has the most. Since you really want wireless, if you got a 360 you'd have to pick up the wireless adapter, which I've seen for 70ish bucks lately in quite a few places. Blu Ray is really nice if you have a TV setup that actually makes it worth it. Heft the controllers, see what you like as well, since that will be a big factor if you haven't gamed on consoles for a while.

The best solution is get both :D If you get either though, dell has a good deal on both consoles with 15% off right now.

And in before this thread turns into a flamepit!

Sony's E3 conference is tomorrow and lots of people are assuming a ps3 price cut or the announcement of a slim ps3 SKU, so I wouldn't buy one until waiting to see what they say tomorrow at least :D

A few things on the xbox wireless, the old xbox wireless adapter works and it's half the price, and you can use a laptop (do you have one?) or a wireless router to be a ghetto wireless adapter for the xbox.

If you want to play online I would say the 360 is the way to go. It does cost money but live is a much better system as far as how it is organized.

I would wait because there might be some price drops this year, but both systems have good games. The first game I thought of when you said you want to play games with your wife is Little Big Planet for PS3. In my opinion the PS3 is more future proof and has a higher percentage of better reviewed games (quality). (source: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6210357.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=hot-stories)

For FPS shooters on the PS3 your first stop should be Killzone 2 which is incredible. Resistance 1 and 2 are good. And of course there's Metal Gear Solid 4. Uncharted is also very good 3rd person shooter action adventure game. Warhawk is a fun 3rd person shooter for online only. Condemned is okay. I haven't played it yet but I heard inFamous was good.

I'll just make a list of PS3 games you should get or consider if you're looking at action games...

FPS Games:
Killzone 2
Resistance 1 & 2
The Orange Box (If you haven't played Half Life 2 yet)
Bioshock
Rainbow Six Vegas 1 & 2
Condemned 1 & 2
Unreal Tournament 3
The Darkness
Battlefield: Bad Company
Fallout 3 (more role playing but still great)
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (awesome)

3rd person action/shooter:
Metal Gear Solid 4
Grand Theft Auto 4
Uncharted
Warhawk
inFamous
Dead Space
Resident Evil 5
The Darkness (awesome story and action)
Heavenly Sword
Devil May Cry 4
Little Big Planet (doesn't really fit into this category but is still 3rd person and is really fun, especially with 2 or more people)
Lego Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and Batman are games you could play with your wife which may sound kiddy but are actually fun. And i'm a big Star Wars fan myself and found Lego Star Wars to be great.

Racing:
Burnout Paradise
Dirt
GRID
Grand Turismo 5: Prologue (Is limited but 5 is going to be incredible. This is more of a preview)

Honestly right now as far as racing games I would go with a Xbox because I like their racing games, but I am partial towards Gran Turismo b/c I think it's the best although Forza 2 is excellent. As far as games you and your wife could play, I would have to go with the Xbox b/c of the games they have on Xbox Live. I really like the arcade games. I have both so it would be hard for me personally to decide on one or the other, but check out the games, read some reviews, and see for yourself. Good luck.

You kind of answered your own question right there. Get the system with the games you want.

I also went a very long time without playing any console games(played through the Atari 2600 to SNES days, then went to PC gaming) and had a PS3 recently dropped in my lap. It is pretty great. I don't have as much experience with the 360 so I can't really compare.

Consoles have really gotten much better in terms of usability, graphics, so many other areas. Not a bad idea to get one.

Also, Blu-Ray IS the shit. If you don't agree you are probably a luddite and/or need a new prescription.

Blu-Ray really is pretty swell. I'm always biased towards the PS3, but if Blu-Ray isn't a concern for you then I'd say it's a wash and you should look strictly at the titles you want.

I have all three consoles and without a doubt the 360 is used the most. But I'm not saying run out and buy a 360, look at the games you play and then decide.

Go with a PS3, much lower failure rate then a 360. Also go with the PS3 because blu-ray is sex on a disc.

Edit: As the person below me pointed out, they seem to have fixed the problem. That being said, go PS3 because blu-ray rocks:p

I don't really think that's true anymore. I haven't heard of jasper RROD. The new 360s run much cooler and quieter.

I can't really say what is good on the X360 that your wife may like, but I'll tell you what girls tend to like that have played with my PS3.

Little Big Planet = almost instant win :p
Pixel Junk Eden
Pixel Junk Monsters
flower
Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction / Quest for Booty

and of course, any Rock Band :)

Ah, I don't really pay attention much to the 360 information. I'll edit my post accordingly.

Thanks for the piece of info.

One warning on that... getting through some of the levels in co-op is bastard frustrating. (I'm looking at you spinning electrified wheel level)

Don't attempt with sharp objects nearby. :D

For most genres its more or less a wash, but if you want racing games the only real option is the 360. You get everything the ps3 has plus the forza games. The gran turismo series is stuck eternally in limbo and quite frankly I don't expect it to be better than forza 3, considering forza 2 was excellent and they've had an entire development cycle to learn and improve.

As a fellow old guy, here's a few other things to weigh in on that aren't often mentioned:

Controllers - I have big hands and the PS3 controller is much more tiring/uncomfortable for me after long gaming sessions while the 360 feels perfect to me. The joysticks on the PS3 are far more comfortable on your thumbs than the 360. The 360 triggers are better than the PS3. Try them both in your hands and see if one feels awkward or not.

Noise - My PS3 is significantly quieter than my 360 when it comes to spinning the disks. This may or may not be annoying depending upon your home theater set up and console location (it is annoying to me). Some of this can be alleviated by the 360 game install option.

Netflix - if you have a subscription, it's very nice to have a 360 for instant movies.

Obviously, as already mentioned, games and your preference of them are key. I love both my consoles and by having both I get to play whatever exclusive titles I desire, but I do find I play the 360 more frequently than the PS3 by a 3:1 margin. I love my PS3 for watching Blu Ray movies and frankly wish I could somehow meld the best parts of both consoles into one perfect machine.

Racing games are another wash...you've got PGR and Forza on the 360 and motorstorms and eventually GT5 on the ps3.

PGR series is dead. The last game bombed.

Wipeout HD on PS3 is getting 8 new tracks and new vehicles etc..

GT5 is the pinnacle of console driving/racing games.
Plus the most awesome logitech wheels only work on PS3 and PC.

The most important decision is which exclusive games you like more, and also if you game with a PC. If one is not a PC gamer, the X360 is a better choice. But if you have a gaming PC, a PS3 is more complimentary IMO.

xbox. Better community. Better online play. Less expensive. That's my pick.

Xbox 360 now... PS3 later. Can't go wrong with both though. I tend to buy games with a slight focus on multiplayer on 360 and single player games go to the PS3 simply because XBLive has better online play than PSN IMO.

Thanks all! I'll drag the wife up to Gamestop tonight to look at some games and play with the controllers (good tip there, I hadn't thought about that at all--I have big hands and my wife has little hands). If I go with the PS3 I'll certainly wait a couple days and hopefully get some kind of price drop.

Gee, shocking. How the fuck is the PGR series dead? I guess he can't play any of the games that have been released so far?

You never cease to ruin a perfectly good thread with your fanboy nonsense.

This is the point where everyone keeps arguing even though the OP has thanked everyone for their input and is off to see for themselves. :D

NO U

I think you're right, these threads always have to go for at least 5 times as many pages as it took for the op to make a decision.

I'll list some advantages of the PS3 that I like:

1) Blu Ray Player, plays nicely on my 32" LCD
2) MGS4 is a PS3 exclusive game, worth the ps3 admission IMO
3) Hard drive for PS3 isn't proprietary / tricky and easy to upgrade. Upgrading mine to a 320gb 7200rpm hard drive for $68 on the egg
4) Prices came down on the ps3 recently
5) You can install Linux on the ps3 with open office I belive. Going to try that soon.
6) Oh yah, your pc momo steering wheel....it's going to work on the ps3...and pretty much everything with usb works on the ps3.
7) You can find used ps3 on craigslist for <$300

Xbox 360 advantage:

1) Cheaper and same graphics as ps3
2) Bigger online community which might be a huge factor there if you plan to play online. Doesn't xbox live cost money though? I think with ps3 you just need an ethernet connection.

3) Hard drive for PS3 isn't proprietary / tricky and easy to upgrade. Upgrading mine to a 320gb 7200rpm hard drive for $68 on the egg

Forgot about that one, huge advantage for the ps3. I love that I never have to think about space on my ps3 since I replaced the HD.

Op should just edit his opening post with "thanks, I've made up my mind".

if you're rich get both. if i had the money for one RIGHT NOW i'd be totally torn only because of my past experience with the 360 and it's shoddy hardware.

I might end up with both, but for now I think I'm going to get the Xbox. Super Herb's advice was right on, the PS3 controller wasn't very comfortable in my gargantuan paws. There seem to be plenty of interesting-looking games on both consoles, so that wasn't too much of an issue. Thanks again, everyone.

And I edited the original post just for you, Baker. :p

I wish I had man hands. :p

Have fun with whatever you go for anyway. They're both very capable machines.
