Ok, I'm looking to overclock my Q6600, but I'm not sure what it's doing at the moment at factory settings. My problem is that when i run HWMonitor, i get TWO SETS of temp readings, that are 20c apart! I was hoping someone could help me out which reading is correct.

Hardware as follows:

CPU: Q6600 @ 2.4ghz
MoBo: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P
GPU: XFX 8800GT
RAM: x2 2GB Corsair
Case: Hiper Osiris w/ x3 140mm fans, bottom mounted PSU
PSU: Xclio X14 S4P3 550W
CPU Heatsink: Zalman CNPS7500-Alcu

Thank you Daemas, I worried as much. Can anyone advise what would be the likely cause of such high temps, when nothing has been changed ever since the parts were put in the case? All the fans are on all the time, i have a filter on the intake fan at the front, and plenty of space inside the case.

To be honest, i dont understand why my core temps should be this high when everything's stock.
 
is that idle or load? if load, what are you doing to load it?

if it's idle, reapply your thermal paste, you probably used too much. I put two rice sized blobs in the middle and then take a credit card or a razor or some hard plastic and spread it out over the cpu.

also, i can't find any decent reviews of your CPU cooler, which probably means it's pretty crappy. Try reapplying your paste, but if that doesn't fix it and you want to spend some cash, this guy is probably the best bang for your buck cpu cooler out there right now

EDIT: also, i would use Coretemp for your CPU temps because it seems to be more accurate.

His cooler looks like it's made mostly for older AMD and Intel CPUs as it only fits up to LGA775. Could be it's just not beefy enough to handle his CPU.

Also, I just installed the HSF you reference in your post and while it does cool a whole lot better than stock, it's HUGE. Gotta make sure you have at least 6 and 5/16 inches between the CPU and the side of the case

Those temps are at idle. I did just download and run the Open HWM, and it reads four temps different to HWM's. According to HWM I'm idling at high 40s/low 50s, whilst Open says i'm idling in the high 30s/low 40s.

I'll look at getting a beefier cooler too. Pretty sure I don't have the headroom for the Coolermaster heatsink. I think i'll hold off on OC-ing until I've gotten a better cooler.
