I just build a new PC last week. This is not my first built, but first time I am trying to overclock.

Specs:
E6600 @ 2.4 GHz
abit AB9 Pro MoBo
Patriot DDR2 800 (PC6400) 4-4-4-12 2.2 V

Here is what I have going so far:

For a normal system boot, I only had to up the DDR2 voltage to 2.1 V to get it running at all (vs the auto-detect 2.0 V)

My only successful OC - 2.8 GHz

I left the multiplier at 9x (stock) and increased clock to 311 MHz.
I was able to leave core voltage at default (1.35 V),
and upped DDR2 V +0.1,
MHC +0.5,
and ICHIO +0.5.

This setting so far has been stable running Prime95 torture test overnight.

I wish to achieve between 3.0 and 3.2 GHz, but so far cannot keep it stable or bootable.
I have tried:

Upping Core Voltage up to +0.750 V
Upping DDRV to either 2.2 or 2.3 V
MCH up to +0.15 V and same with ICHIO V
Manually chainging DDR timings in BIOS to 4-4-4-12 (Unbootable)
Changing multiplier to 8 and CLK to 375 MHz

I was successfully able to use a utility program to OC on the fly (while Vista is operating) and get a 3.0 GHz started, but RAM dumps after about 1 or 2 min of Prime 95.
Settings were:
CKL=334,
VCore 1.375,
DDR 2.3V,
MCH 1.35 & 1.4 V,
ICHIO 1.6 V.

I do not know how to set up the ram timings at all though.

Here is a look into my BIOS/Mobo

Any help / advice would be great. Oh, and I have a great big Cu cooler on the CPU, if anyone thought heat was the issue. Its not.
 
Do I want a 1:1 for the DDR FSB:DRAM? Only way I can get that option is if I set the DRAM Spec off of auto and to DDR2 533 in BIOS .
 
yes you do want 1:1 for the ram, it will make it easier for you and not to worry for the ram's stability.
 
I would advice you to not push your ram no more than 900mhz or if you can dont even overclock your ram , your FSB will be around 400 , and your Vcore will be around 1.43Vcore - 1.50Vcore. Your ram will be able to stay at ddr800 and still maintain low latencies and performance. Its a sweet spot for me 3.4ghz , it stays cool and you get good bang per watt , after that the gradient of the consumption steeps up like a porabola,;)

Overclocking the CPU is easy , the ram is something you need experiance with and need eclipse advice from the memory segment of this forum.
 
Hey, here's what's going on so far. I did not understand much about memory until I read the memory section. OK, so if you can verify this. The original CPUZ image I have above shows a 2:3 ratio FSB:DDR, and it was running over 400 MHz - taking into account DDR that means its an effective 800+ right? So what I did now is change the ratio to 1:1. I can (so far) get a stable clock speed of 333 mhz, and the RAM is running at 333 MHz now - is that an effective comparison to 666 MHz? After I am sure this is stable, I will try to push further. Oh, and what are some acceptable limits to raising voltages? My ram is rated at 2.2 V, and is running fine at that right now, MCH is +0.1 V and the ICHIO is also +0.1 V. Where would anyone cut off raising these voltages?
 
look you have ddr800 , trust me on this , put your ram at 400 (so its runs at what its stated) and your cpu at 400 and your Vcore at 1.46V , save and your done

Run orthos , overclocking is a piece of cake , easy as pie;)

Run orthos for four hours , I promise you its stable.

Leave your ram on auto , , you can put the MCH a little , (North bridge)0.1 to maybe 0.2 and your done , you will boot at 3.6ghz
 
Turns out your experience so far proves to be true. I was increasing voltage too much elsewhere and not giving core enough. I immediately got 3.2 stable with a little more juice to the cpu. I'll try the 3.6 GHz as soon as I'm sure this works. Thanks for your help man. I learned you were right the tedious way by testing in 5 MHz incraments.

Just watch the change in temperatures and run Orthos for a good 15 to 20 minutes to test for stability (run it for a few hours later).

Your CPU might do 3.6ghz, to try it. FSB 400, RAM 800, CPU Voltage 1.4V (might need more). FSB Voltage should be 1.3 or 1.4V. Ram Voltage should be stock.

Disable SpeedStep, Thermal Control, C1E, and anything Throttle, Spectrum related.
