It's been 2-3 years since I've been keeping track of PC hardware so bear with me.

I've got a Core 2 due (stock 1.86ghz but I run it at ~3.0ghz). My old 7900gt video card is literally dying on me (3/4 of the time I start up, my monitor shuts off, gives off a high-pitched whine, and the 'on' led blinks along with the noise). It's been getting worse.

So, long story short, I'm reading that the Geforce GTX 260 is a great card. Is it just way too overkill for my PC at this point? If I can save money without losing much performance, would a 9800gt suffice? I'll be willing to pay extra for the 260, but only if I will notice a difference vs. a much cheaper card.

I would say a GTX 260 is overkill for 1280 x 1024. I'm guessing you mainly play games with your rig? A 9800GT should perform just fine at that resolution.

yeah a 9800gt level of card is good for that res and would be a massive jump over the 7900gt.

OP if you were fairly happy with your 7900gt then even a lowly 9600gt would be 3 times the performance of your 7900gt in modern games while consuming much less power. a 9800gt would let you crank more settings over the 9600gt but thats as high as I would go for 1280x1024. a gtx260 at such a low res would not be necessary for 99% of games. also you would probably need to oc your cpu a bit more to fully push the gtx260 at just 1280x1024.

I would recommend a 4830, more than enough for 1280/1024 or a 4770 for a little more power. 9800gt is a good choice but has more power than you need so a waste of money imo.

the gtx 260 would bottleneck your cpu. At that res the 9600gt will be more than fine. What psu are you running? The 9600gt and 9800 gt and 260 all require direct power draw off your psu. If its a stock psu you will be in trouble.

As everyone else has said, the GTX 260 is way overkill for your setup, it would be a much better use of your money to get a 9600GT/9800GT.
