Help a first time builder please.

I feel stupid asking this, but I would feel a lot more stupid if I fried my processor. I have read that you can mount your HS/F 180 degrees backwards. That leaves me with a 50/50 chance of mounting it correctly if that is true. The instructions that came with the HS/F don't mention it, and I can't find hard evidence from websites on mounting it correctly. How can I make sure that I am mounting it correctly? Thanks for you help.

the core is in the center of the processor. You want the heatsink to be ontop of the core. With that knowledge, you should be fine.

I understand that. But I don't think that answers my question. I wasn't implying that I mount the fan on top of the processor if I understand what you were explaining to me. I was wondering about the 2 mounting clips on both sides of the heatsink. And there are 2 possible positions to mount the HS/F. I don't know which 2 mounting clips go to which 2 mounts. Help please? I recently mounted the same HSF on my A64 a few weeks ago and the instructions that came with it were, in my opinion, easy to follow. There is a picture showing which way it goes.

I really don't think it matters, so long as it is attached securley and not coming off. It might be easier to remove and change if its on one way or the other, but I really can't see it making a difference. All I have mounted A64 too is a Asus K8V-SE Deluxe, and its all the same on either side.

Thanks, I mounted both ways before putting on thermal compound (AS5), and it seems either way is fine, proc hasn't gone kablooey yet, and thanks, it doesn't seem to matter which way it is positioned, easier access to wires is what I chose. Thanks again, good night (formatting HD).

Well when I put this A64 together I remember one corner of the CPU heat sink having a small triangle itched in the metal that matched a small triangle in the mounting spot on the MOBO. If you are really worried it shouldn't be the hard to change.

I think the thing that was most frustrating as a new builder was that I read a some instructions about how to apply the thermal compound that involved using a credit card and attempting to spread the compound thinly but evenly. Later I just used the small dab in the center method and let the pressure do the job. Makes me scratch my chin now and wonder if the that tutorial was written my snipe hunter?
