all right, long story made short, i wanna be able to compare memory overclocking on both AM2 and LGA775. to do this, i need two rigs that are good at overclocking memory.

for the intel side, this kinda means:

low cpu multi that'll do high mhz. preferably cheap ;)
i'm thinking something like the 920 atm, maybe maybe celeron
and no, i don't have the time to wait for conroe. i'm not in this for the performance, i just need something to test memory with

for the mobo, an asus P5WD2, since it's one of few rated for ddr2-800

sound like a good plan? :D
 
MAybe check out the 6x1 series Cedar Mill chips. They are Single core, 65nm processors. They hit extremely high clocks and the lower end models sound just what you are looking for.

Multi on that model is 15x.


65nm Pentiums are showing a trend of achieving above average overclocks.


Dual Core wise, the P920 or P930 should serve you well, the 930 also has a 15x multi I believe. It seems the 930 is cheaper than the 920, which is why I recommend it.

Who doesn't love cheap?

^ yeah I agree on the cedar mill idea. They overclock spectacularly, and will be easier to cool compared to the 9xx's since they're only single core. All you're concerned with is overclockability, after all.

Celeron would be a bad idea since their low fsb = very high multi. Even a 2.53ghz celery results in a 19x multi. That's a no-go.

i guess a 631 it is :D
they usually hit 4-4.5ghz with good air/water?
 
Hook a 631 on water and you could see some serious clocks.

I personally love water cooling, as it allows me the freedom to play with core voltages (even though I am running at stock voltage now).


I saw a 631 do 4.2Ghz on air somewhere over at xtremesys. Check the Intel Forums over there, should be a 65nm overclocking sticky.

yeah that should be more than attainable. Heck, even my older 560J hits 4.1ghz on the stock cooler.

And the P5WD2 should serve you well...I've heard nothing but good things about it.

saw some guy hit something like 5.2ghz on an Abit board on xtreme systems (water cooled) with a cedar mill.

that's what i'm seeing too. as much as i dislike asus for amd boards, they have some seriously awesome intel boards :p
