Hello everyone. Been lurking around here for a bit but just thought I'd stop in and say hello before I ask a question. A bit about me: I'm 24 from wood village Oregon. I'm a community leader on the Astro gaming forums as well as a chat expert for their products :) so any questions on their stuff feel free to ask! (short into. Ask if you have questions about me and I'd love to answer)

So Ive been debating the last two days over which new card to get. Been looking at the 6970 on newegg for $319 after rebate. Which is a good deal and in my price range! Should I get that or maybe wait for the MSI Frozr 670? I assume that will be around $400. Are the 670s a noticeable difference to me in terms of quality? (I don't care about power consumption) for what I have read they are close, but also see the opposite that the 670 is significantly better. I usually play games like skyrim, Starcraft, league of legends, dead space. Wanting to play some counter strike when it comes out. Maybe some diablo.

I'll only be using one monitor. I have a 22 inch 1080 60hz and I play in 1920 resolution. I like to upgrade to the benq XL 120hz monitor soon but only for 1920. I really want the 6970 for the price. I just don't want to loose out on quality from the 670.

Will I be set for a while with the 6970?
 
Welcome! I am running a 6950 unlocked to 6970 and like it a lot. Takes care of things pretty well. Having said that I also have a gtx 480 that I am going through the EVGA step-up process to a gtx 670. The 670 is considerably faster than a 6970 or gtx 480 and will allow me to do 3d gaming or multiple screens.

The one thing I see is although the 6970 most likely will have plenty of power for you, the price doesnt seem that great. With the gtx 670 putting a lot of pressure on pricing I think you will see more cuts coming soon, and the 7870 is a bit faster with several deals now for the same price AR. So yes, the 6970 will work well for you, but no, its not a good deal with the price/performance ratio. If you can get a deal on a 7870 or 6970 for about $280 or lower, then that would be decent. As it is, for an extra 80 bucks (only 50-60 bucks if you dont count the rebate) you get a LOT more performance with the gtx 670.

I'd go with the 670 when it goes on sale, if ever... wouldn't pay MSRP for it.

As for something to fill the gap: used 6950 1GB variants go for ~$150 and that will run all the games you have listed, at the resolution you specified, (assuming you have a current quad core processor. as half, or more, of those games are highly CPU dependent).

and then, when you're ready for the 670, resell the 6950, and you'll be right where you want to be.
