Hello, I have just joined this forum to keep up to date with the goings on here in your DC community. I've really just started folding and was doing so for Tom's Hardware Guide Community, I've accrued about 16,000 points in the last two weeks, this put me in the top 15 producers so I'm looking for more of a challenge and a more active community (and to help science more of course), this is why I have joined team 33.

The hardware I have at my disposal currently is an Intel E6400 CPU with a 8800GTS 640 card. I have the graphical and GPU clients running at outputs of ~500 and ~3,000 PPD respectively, I think I'm going to OC both the CPU and GPU a little. I also have a PS3 running ~1,000 PPD. All are running 24/7 for the moment.

I'm looking into creating a farm of small form factor 2.5GHz+ P4s I might be able to get hold of, or perhaps invest in a 9800GTX+ as I'm due for an upgrade anyway. If I do get multiple cards I will also upgrade to a Q6600 or Q9450 to keep them fueled and use the E6400 in an el cheapo build. I can do this as I have a 160GB HDD spare along with one of the 4 1GB sticks I have in my main rig, along with all the other bits. All I'll need is a cheap 775 mobo and I'll be good to go. This rig can then be populated with more GFX cards! And it goes on...

A few questions I had, will my 680i support 3x graphics cards for folding, and is it possible to run multiple GPU clients currently? I am aware it has 2 16x slots and 1 1x or something like this, I assume the 1x slot is out for folding?

I have 2 rigs with quad core Xeon E5440s and Quadro FX 570s at work, It's just getting permission and sorting out the firewall/proxy to do.

1-If you are talking about 3 ATI cards, it's possible but not with NVIDIA cards (it is planned to be available soon tho).
2- 1x would work and you might lose about 25% of points due to that. the minimum is 2x but you can still fold with a 1x slot without problems. Put the slowest card in this slot.

Cheers guys, I like the competitiveness here. I'm thinking the way to go is a 9800 GTX+ for now when they get released along with a Q6600, for £120 it's an absolute bargain. I wish the multi Nvidia GPU client was available. I suppose I'll get a cheap motherboard and run the E6400 and GTS on there for now.

I'm in Suffolk at the moment, but I do make regular trips to Manchester and stop in at Scan whenever I can

Seriously that £120 was from there just a few hours ago! I'm now waiting for the cheap 9800 GTX as well, didn't realise they had one for that price, I'd be getting one this weekend if they were in stock. I have been tempted by the GX2 but can't justify the £315 tag despite spending £320 first time round on a GTS 640 (from Scan no less).

Can you point me towards the multi GPU client please? Is it the 6.12 beta8 GPU2?

Thanks, I was assuming that the data is moved around the card mostly and does not use much memory or CPU as it's all there on the card, so the x1 would be ok.

Can you point me towards the multi GPU client please? Is it the 6.12 beta8 GPU2 ?

You first download the 6.12 beta8 client as normal.
Then download the new FahCore_11.exe v1.07 from Here.
It goes in the data folder.
Once thats done, just hook up your monitors so that you can expand the desktop across them.
Make a copy of both the client folder and the data folder.
Make new shortcuts and add the -gpu x switch.
Fold at twice the speed.

The last time I was at Scan, the bank put a block on my card while I was there.
I had spent far to much there in the recent past, that they thought it was a fraudulent transaction .......
I was 10 mins on the phone explaining, no I just spend a lot there.

Cheers, I'll get that set up as soon as I get the second card. It's a minefield now, the prices are all over the place. Those £130 9800 GTXs are coming in on the 9th, but I can also see the GTX 260 for £215 and like you say the 9800 GX2 can be had for £235. The 4870 sits in the middle of course at £186

I'll have a look at the FS thread, see what is in there.

Can someone explain the badges a little more for me? I see now I have 3x [H] symbols, where I had one a few days ago? Do the colours of the symbol have any meaning?

Hi Dan, welcome to the [H]orde!

I can understand you dad's "Army of 1" individualism and it's all good as it's for the same cause, so it's kinda like being a part of the larger team anyway.

But... if your dad decides he wants to join a team for the spirit and competition well.... There's Folding with the Best (Team 33 of course ) and then there's Folding with the Rest. You saw that distinction obviously, maybe he will too in time.

Either way it's all good!!

Just thought I'd chuck in a quick update, I've got a 9800GTX and the 8800GTS now, having the problem of slowdown on the second card but with a healthy OC I'm putting out 5700 and 2500 PPD

Here are a couple of images of the rig as it looks now, currently ghetto modding some 120mm fans to blow over the GFX cards, I have one of those cases with a mesh part to let in air towards that area

It's a rather snug fit, I had to shuffle the hard drives to even get them in. The area bottom left under the GTS gets very hot, thinking of taping up those slots that vent back into the case, I have the fan speed at 100% on it so this should be okay right?

Anyone know the PPD for a FX570?

I would imagine that anything you can do to prevent the dirty (hot) exhaust air from coming back into your case would be a good thing to do. In server rooms its best to keep a hot aisle and a cool aisle. The same thing exists for your computers. If you can get cool air in the front, and hot exhaust out the back that's your best bet. The less those air streams mix the better.

Then if you can get your Air conditioning to take from the hot side and dump on the cold side you have a perfect loop.

I just noticed the Palit frog is all happy and cool, the thing on the Leadtek is like 'I'm going to F your shit up'.

Taped all the gaps in the cards so air can't 'escape' on it's way out, also moved the fan as follows, it's not really ghetto as I used electrical rather than duct tape
