Hi Everyone,

I'm replacing my 300D with a 30D. It's the 30D body with the kit 18-55 lens, and it should be here on Wednesday. I'm really looking forward to it.

I had planned on keeping my 300D for another year, but I ran into someone who wanted it more than I did and was willing to give me $500 for it. So, I figured I'd get rid of it and upgrade before it depreciates any more.

I was very close to getting a 20D, but decided the couple extra features were worth the money to me. I purchased it from Dell with a 15% off coupon wich brought the price down to $1275, but by the time that tax was added it came to $1365 (I wish like crazy that I lived in a state that Dell doesn't charge tax for). My original plan was to get just the body, but this price was close enough to the body-only price that I decided the kit lens was worth the extra. It's at least a basic back-up lense, or good for if I want to carry my camera as light as possible.

nice choice. I have the 20d and really like the upgrades made to the shutter mechanism in the 30d. 100,000 shots sounds like a long love affair.
 
I am abit jealous:) I love my 20 d you'll love the 30d (i really want that 2.5" lcd) though i have been thinking that the 5d would be a lovely addition to the bag:D

I hear you, I've got friends with 20D's who are happy with their camera but still wish that they could justify upgrading to the 30D.

The 5D is definitly very cool, but I'd probably be inclined to put my money into some L series glass before I seriously consider upgrading to it.

In this thread, Digicam vs DLSR, there is a quiz you take to see if you can tell the difference between the two.

I'd like to see the same quiz, but have it "L" series lens vs non "L" series lens. And see if anyone can come out with a positive score. My guess would be no, for the most part. I'm sure there are many lenses that are crappy, but most are so damn comparable to the L's that the cost difference would be too much to bare.

Very very true. I think a lot of the personal satisfaction is just psychological. I have to admit that I am a sucker too but I try not to promote the idea and act like "L" series is the be all end all lens because I know my reason for thinking that isn't really true. The L series is just the top of the line Canon series. Other brands' top of the line lenses are usually pretty comprable.

That would be very neat to see a test like that but of course, the pictures would have to be 100% crops to see the fineness of the detail.
 
Their is no reason to update to a 30d from a 20D - the added features are minimal.

Make sure you buy a better lens, the stock one is okay for portrais and such but to see that camera shine you will want to buy some quality lenses.

i agree there is no reason to upgrade but if your buying a new camera theres little point buying a 20d when the 30 is out and is actually quite reasonable in price.

Exactly,when i got my 20D i dropped $3500 Canadian total for it last october (good lense / battery grip/ 1g CF) - i got a 3 years extended warrenty as i know the 20D will MORE then enough for me - then when i saw the price of the 30D i was like dammit! why didnt i wait 6 months..lol
 
Hmm know a place where I can get the 30d kit for $1350, the 20d kit for $1250, 30d body $1250. Tempted to invest in the 30d as my first dslr, but is a big investment. Tempted to get a rebel xt or wait till the 20d hit the 900$ range. XT is nice but the body is hard to get accostumed.

I'd go for the 30D, the 20D may never hit the $900 range and if it does the 30D will cost less than now anyways so it wouldn't be worth it. The 20D is a really good camera but its price is so close to the 30D's that you might as well go for the newer one. The XT would also be good and it's not as bad to get used to as you might think. When you are out taking pictures you forget about all of that. So, you could get the XT and nicer glass for about the same price of its bigger sibling. If you don't plan to go pro any time soon, then I think that may be the best choice. If the grip of the rebel is too uncomfortable you could always go for the battery grip but that won't be necessary.
 
Money is tight the xt can be found about 700-650 kit with the 100$ cannon rebate, only thing ill miss from bigger one is controll wheel, build and durability(last one not proven yet).

"yet"? lol.. The more expensive one is, or should be, more durable of course, but that goes for almost everything, not just cameras. the xt sounds like the right camera for you if money is tight, however, if you plan on doing photography for money in the near future then I'd save up for the 30D. if not then click on that "SUBMIT ORDER" button and enjoy your rebel xt.
