I got a serious delima lol. I just got a BFG 6800 Ultra OC 256mb DDR video card from a buddy for $220.00. He did a complete system upgrade to SLI technology so he let it go for cheap to me. I read BFG's site and I need a minimal 480W PSU. I have a 350W PSU in my system right now.

I have plans of doing a massive upgrade in 6 months when I get my funds together. What is a decent but cheap 500W PSU that I can use for now to run this card? I'm going to be buying the Vortec 500W PSU in 4 months when I can. Right now I only got about $40.00 to spend. I'm wondering if a $30 500W PSU will be ok to run it.

Is that $30 after about $50 or more dollars worth of rebates?

It's a PowMax Demon 480WATT for 30.00. Free shipping.

You would be better off with a cinder block bolted to your case.

or

I suck it up and buy the power supply I planned on buying for these upgrades.

THAT'S sucking it up?

Be right back with some WAY better alternatives......

EDIT: What kind of motherboard are you using? Is this video card AGP or PCI-e?

Thank you.

I'm just trying to spend as little as I can. I really shouldnt of bought that BFG but for the price it wasn't worth passing up. I'm trying to save and not touch because I want to do a complete system upgrade to my entire system. I was stupid and paid 3 grand for a built system that came with a POS Northwood Processor, FX5200 and the worlds crappiest case. It's so bad I had to run with a deskfan next to the motherboard until I hacked up the case and mounted fans. I've decided to rebuild and design my own this time. I have money saved up but I want to wait until I reach my goal and buy everything at once and set it all up. So for the time being this PSU I want something resonably priced that will run it without killing me. The components I have at the moment are;

P4 2.8GHz HT Northwood
DVD/CDRW Drive
Floppy Drive
2 Case Fans

Thats all I can think of thats drawing power.

eWiz has the Antec SmartPower 550W for about $60.

Directron has a Coolermaster 450W for only $59.99.

Newegg has an ePower 500XP for $50.50 and an Xclio 450BL for $52.50.

Provantage has an Ultra X-Finity for $57.76.

All of these suggestions are WAY better than what you're looking at.

Ok.. I've narrowed it down to two PSU's.

Ultra X-Finity 500W Black

or the

ePower 500XP

Which one would you chose if you had to make the decision?

They're both really similar. Both have 28A on the 12V rail. But the ePower has the 120MM fan, so it may be a bit quieter.

Also, I asked you what kind of board you have and you told me what kind of CPU you have, which still doesn't tell me if your board is 20 or 24-pin.

Point being, the ePower has a 24-pin connector where the X-Finity does not. So if you have a 24-pin connector on the motherboard, by all means get the ePower. With the X-Finity at Provantage, you'll need an adapter.

Aww... Such a cute little board. ;)

Yeah.. It's only 20-pin. You could use either one.

?!?

I can use a 24 Pin connector with the 20 Pin mobo? Wont affect anything other then having 4 pins hanging on the side?

Wondering what is worth buying tho. I like the Finity, it has a decent cable management setup but the ePower is cheaper. I coudl always buy wire looms and just cover up the ePower cables :) lol.

The X-Finity for $57.76 is NOT the FlexForce model. It has standard cables.

The ePower's 24-pin power connector allows you to snap the last four wires off to turn the ATX connector into a 20-pin.

Ah ok. Well I think I'm going the ePower. But funny it has a 120MM Fan Ontop. Wonder where its going to get Air from? Considering I have no hole in the top of my case. May flip it upside down so the fan is facing down instead.

The fan is supposed to face down.

Never mind.

I know what you mean partner. Thanks for your help really. One day I'll grasp the reality of PSU's and what all is involved. I know I need to study when I start building this SLI Computer. Once again thank you for your help and your time of finding PSU's for me!
