Hey guys,

I recently had to ship my Abit IC7-G mobo back to NewEgg for a replacement. That involved removing the little snap-in heatsink that came with my Intel P4 3.00 GHz processor (which is why I'm posting on this board... feel free to move if it's wrong board =/ ).

I used the heatsink that came with the box, which involved no thermal compound. It just had some putty-looking stuff on the bottom of the heatsink. When I removed the heatsink to take the processor out, half the goop ended up on the processor and the other half on the heatsink.

My first question is, do I need to scrape off the goop and put new stuff on, or can I reuse it? Do I need to do anything special to get that to work properly again?

My second question involves recommending a heatsink. I'm going to want to overclock sometime in the near future, and the heatsink that came with my Intel chip probably won't cut it. Can you recommend any heatsinks that would go with my mobo and will do a better job, and of course that are easy to install (no yucky glues please!)?

Hmm, I checked out that tutorial, and a lot of it didn't make sense. I'm not sure I applied it in that manner in the first place, so let me elaborate and double-check.

I bought an Intel P4 3.00 GHz processor and used their heatsink. The heatsink had something that looked like white putty on it... I just put it over the processor and locked it in place. Now that I removed the processor, there is this putty on both of them.

The goopy stuff was already on the heatsink... it was a putty-like substance. It was not a liquid and I did not have to apply anything myself. It did not go over the sides of the processor upon application. There was no thermal compound or glue involved.

That tutorial looked like it was for people who had applied a glue or something... just trying to clarify. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
 
if it was a pad, which it very likely was
it a Phase Change Thermal Interface Material, and its good for only one application as it melts into the microvalleys of both the CPU and heatsink

to remove it from a Heatsink Id simply scrap it off and then relap the heatsink

but you wouldnt do that to a processor unless you are both extremely rich and obsessed :p
so just employ the process in the first link
and then apply a thermal grease, like Arctic Silver, or even generic Radio Shack ;)

if its just thermal grease and not a pad you can clean it off with isopropyl alcohol
of other solvent like listed in the tutorial
 
Okay, thanks for clarifying that.

If I were to reuse that heatsink, what should I apply between the processor and the heatsink?

Also, still looking for good heatsinks to overclock an Abit IC7-G. :)
 
I'll leave the heatsink recommendation to others
but as for the thermal grease I use Arctic Silver 2, 5 and also Ceramique
 
ThermalRight makes a great Heatsink... I'm running one of their SLK-947U's and it's kicking ass on my little 2.4B@2.8. I never get above 50C with the generic 80mm that's on it now. I am supposed to get my new 92mm Tornado later today and am very curious as to how well it's gonna do. So, my official recommendation would be a ThermalRight SP-94. It's a bit spendy for a chunk of copper, but matched with the right fan, the only way to beat it is with water.
 
I'd recommend the Zalman 7000ALCU. It is very quiet, cools very well, and is only ~$35. I'm using one on my IC7-G, and love it.
 
get a zalman CNPS 7000Cu or 7000ALCU, I own both and they are amazing coolers, really quiet and great for overclocking.

Since you own both versions of the Zalman 7000 which in your opinion is better; the heavier CU or the ALCU version? NewEgg is currently out of stock on the CU but the ALCU is in stock and cheaper. If they are roughly equal I was going to get the ALCU version as I need it this week for a friend's PC build.
